240 Inwall Construction (Image Intense)

A quick tank update... I did my monthly water change yesterday. Last night, the tank went through another spawning event, although not as intense as the last. This time, the full moon is three days off, being May 20th. I'm beginning to think that I can induce a spawning event based on the lunar solstice and when I do water changes. ;) Seriously, I think I am going to move my water change day further from the full moon and see if I can prevent these occurrences. Cleaning up after the corals' play time is not fun.

I've had a bunch of spawning events, if its not something you're trying to do its a major PITA! Smells bad and its risky if it happens when you're not around.

I find as long as the larger clams and anemones stay out of the event the tank does well. But when they join in the tank literally gets white like milk and you can't even see corals 6 inches past the front glass and the stink!

Keep your eyes out for new critters. I was able to document when the Trochus snails spawned all the way to having dozens of babies collected:

Rich: Yes, the smell is something to be avoided. ;) The last event definitely was SPS related. Take the smell on your hands after handling a particularly slimy SPS piece and multiply that by 1000. :eek2: Were you able to attribute any of your spawning events to a specific timing or event?

I've not seen anything predictable or cause that could be duplicated.

Hi Weatherson,

As always, your tank is beautiful.

Is the canyon running down your tank still visible or has it been filled in by those pesky corals? I would love to see a top down shot. If you were to do it over again, would you approach the original aquascape design differently?

Your thread has always been inspiring and educational and I've been encouraged to copy some of your contraptions. My tank equipment setup doesn't quite have the Weatherson mad scientist look to it yet but maybe one day ...

Regards,

Hesham

Spleen: Thank you.

jnarowe: Yes, there's definitely some growth competition going on in there. ;)

Hesham: Thanks. The canyon is more of a tunnel now. ;) I had to do some pruning through there a while back to open it up some so now the Tangs have access through. In retrospect, I'd have been better to have made the space between the two rock formations greater in width. Aside from this, I still appreciate how the general overall structures turned out now with the corals at large sizes.

Joseph.

Three more months, then you'll need to get that newer larger tank. :p Might as well order it now so it will be on hand in time.

Looks like you are down to what, 50 or 60 gallons?
when i read this it made me think, how many gallons do you think are left in that tank being as full as it is? and how has it affected what you do to your tank? for example, your probably running your ca reactor twice as hard now as when you first set up the tank obviously, but what about other things you might manually add? do you have to add less of anything now that there is less water volume due to large amounts of corals growth? does evaporation make for larger salinity swings because of less water volume?
