Yeah, I too wanted to know more about your sand. What did you start with and how do you keep it so clean?

You know, if you got some nice sps with good growth, and maybe some cool zoo's.... you might have a half decent tank there.
You should also attempt some DIY stuff, maybe learn how to take some decent pictures....

Yeah, with a little hard work, you might have a real future in this hobby.

;)

Marc: That's the beauty of top-down shots. The colors just "pop". Those red zoa's are more orange from the front but still vibrant. The sand is kept clean by the in-tank crew and a heck of a lot of water current. ;) I have four cucumbers, many snails and crabs. Other than the front glass sand that I periodically clean by hand, the rest is all done "automatically". ;) Oh... and yes, I feed daily.

Bax: Plagiarize away. ;)

thewuf: As above and I started with 100% Southdown sand along with several cups of the top layer from my old tank as seed.

DerekW: I'll keep working on it. Someday... someday. :D

Thanks guys.

There are really 3 people that really inspire me at RC to be a better reefer and have a better tank.

You are one for sure. Your tank is so amazing! Your photography skills are as good as it gets!

WWWWWWOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!

RevHtree- I second that! Joseph, you've already heard all the "ooohhing & aaaaahhhhing" and will hear more, but I've got add mine to the teeming masses.... and your aquasculpting- it inspired me a long time, when you first posted your pictures. It made me redesign my tank, (240), and make a dip and valley in the middle, instead of rock work all the way across the tank. Wow, does it make a difference. Just wanted to say thanks and keep it up- and of course, keep the pics coming! :)

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYES!!

I have new wallpaper now :bum:

thanks,

RevHtree: Thank you very much for the kind words. My hope is that this thread motivates others to provide the best habitat for the animals they keep. To hear I have with at least one person means the world to me for the sake of the critters. Saving nature one tank at a time. ;)

TJ: Thank you very much. As to the aquascaping, sometimes empty space can add to the whole. And... you are welcome.

Knyght: Royalties are calculated by the minute but help yourself. :D

 Joseph I really just added it to my webshots, so I only need to pay part-time royalties ;)
As long as my credit is good with you  I would always rather owe you than try to beat you out of it :D

I noticed your sand looks higher in certain areas. Like the front is not so deep, but the back is alot deeper. Is this by design?

I just added sand to my tank and once I got the RO water in and fired it up, the CL moved my sand around leaving the front about 1" and the back sides and a piece in the middle about 4"-5".

I thought of leaving it like this, then after seeing your picture now I'm really considering it. So I was just wondering if you had a plan for the sand layout.

Thanks

I was thinking the same thing.

Always a fan here Weatherson and admirer of truely awesome workmanship. I was about to ask if your pumps move the sand from time to time, or do you have the outputs angled just right so that minimal disturbance is placed "through" the sand and just skims over it?

Very nice work and as always, very informative. Great teacher and pioneer!

Weatherson,
I noticed you have an Ozotech ozone generator. How do you like it? How do you control it? Do you use one of the ozotech driers with it and if not, are you planning on it?

Thanks!

conda & OldmillXxX: As stated earlier, part of the reason my sand remains clean is due to the high current levels in the tank. The Penductors and the sinusoidal valve keep currents very random which constantly and gently moves the Southdown sand about. Very little gets waterborne but there is always dunes or wave shaped formations that alter due to which Penductor is on (6-hour rotation for tide simulation). The natural movement over time has been for the majority of the sand to accumulate towards the back as it travels through the valley. Personally, I prefer the look of this as it does give a natural look, in my opinion. Perfectly flat sand beds don't appeal to me.

The downside to all this is that it is a delicate balancing act as to where the outputs are aimed. For instance, after having taken that previously posted shot where I moved the left and right sinusoidal valve outlets, even after placing them back to what I felt was as close as possible to their original positions, the slight alteration has created new sand movement patterns. Not always a bad thing, just sometimes different. Other times, slight tweaks are required to prevent large amounts of movement. Again, it's all part of the balancing act which is part of the overall challenge. ;)

Ixthys: I do really like the Ozotech ozone generator in that it is ultra powerful, of great quality and trouble free. It has a dial for the level of output which I run at the minimal setting of 1 on a scale of 1 to 10. I don't run a dryer but do run its input air through the large floss/carbon filter which I'm sure helps some. But again, this unit is so powerful that drying the air for efficiency is not required, in my case. As far as control, I used to use the ORP control on my AquaController II but it was so stable that I now just run it 24/7 at the aforementioned lowest setting. This seems to prevent the swings produced by a constant on and off at higher output based on the ORP readings. I do still have programmed in a shut-off for when the skimmer is shut down (too high a pH... which raises the sump level to prevent more Kalkwasser additions) and a too high ORP level, just for safety reasons. This never comes into play, though, thank goodness.

While Ozotech ozone generators are more expensive than others initially, I feel the longevity makes it cheaper in the long-run. Mine has been running without flaw for over 8 years and I bought it used, albeit briefly. I know this sounds like a commercial but is in fact my true belief. ;) No kickbacks have been provided. :D

WOW
2 Days of reading and I have finaly read every word Jospeh.

Your contruction and photography skills are inspiring to the point of action ( I am going to redo all my electrics this week and try and clean things up).

Congratulations and thank you for your time and efforts on this thread.

Regards
Tim

Lunchbucket: Thank you very much.

RevHtree: I don't. ;) Read my previous post.

NanoManMaster: Thanks but no, they are not the SafeCrackers. Keep in mind that the shot of them above was from top-down so colors change compared to from the front of the tank. Here's a shot as they appear looking through the front glass of the tank...

Beautiful none-the-less. ;) Here's a link to ZoaID.com showing the SafeCrackers...

Tim: Thank you very much for the kind words and congratulations on your monumental reading feat. I'm pleased you were able to take something away from it.

tonym10: I'm pleased to have helped and that you found this.
