250 Gallon Starphire SPS tank

Ya I think any and all clams I have in the future will be relegated to a sump as I had a copperband who would only eat mussells for the first couple weeks.

I'm trying to dream up an acrylic contraption to suspend in one of my sumps and then mount a MH over it. I want to make it where I can close it off and dose food, etc!

Sounds like a MELEV project to me!

Sounds like a very pretty prop section to me. :D

I stuck a "show clam" in the QT to see what would happen.

I was prepared to watch the QT tank for a couple of hours to see if he would go for it. He did within 10 seconds, so I removed the clam from QT and put it in my sump along with my other clams.

Wholley crap. So much for the "oh yea, feed them supermarket clams and they will leave ornementals alone". Kinda thought that may not work.

On another note, I,m setting up a larger tank and he,s welcome back home if you decide you have no place for him. And/or no purpose as he does not seem to like the pest things you hoped he would eat.

I may take you up on that, but I doubt it.

I will see how my next Butterfly does. If he eats Aptasia and the unknown anenomes I will give him back, maybe!

Latest posible purchase:

Ozonizer

My Red Sea unit just is not cutting it anymore, it still works but not enough ozone for my system. My ORP has a hard time staying above 300 right now.

I was looking at a commercial system , but the best price I could get was $1600 including auto air dryer.

Right now I am thinking about getting the 300 mg/hr Ozotech unit. It is not exactly cheap, but I think I can get it for about $440 USD.

It is a Corona Discharge unit, and should last a long, long time. The cartridge (or whatever its called) is gauranteed for life.

Even if I don't use an air dryer with it all I have to do is clean it once every 3 months and I am good to go.

Any suggestions from anybody else?

I may upgrade to a 450 gallon system when I build a new house in about 4 years, so I want this ozonizer to work for that too

Ben, you can always bring your ORP controller over to my place when you stop by and drop it into my tank to see if the reading matches what my controller reports.

I will do that.

Took my ORP probe and controller to Tylers place:

My probe registered 230 Mv and his registered 415!:eek1:

Now I know my ORP probe is shot. A bit cheaper then getting a new ozone unit, although I will have to get a new one one of these days. I am sick and tired of baking the beads, so I don't anymore.

Back to the Anenome:

From MarineDepot forum:

They are Thallasianthus aster, as you know they are a nuisance anemone.

I will get the butterfly fish to day and see if I can train him to eat those stupid things.

What type of butterfly are you getting Ben.

Double Saddle Butterfly.

Still waiting on the Double Saddle Butterfly (LFS sells out before I get there twice in a row!)

BTW Tyler, I think your ORP probe may need cleaning, I got a new probe and only get 330 mv at home now.

Latest purchase: Just ordered an Ozotec ozonizer (260 mg/hr). This should last me for years and years, it has replaceable parts, and is easy to clean.

I also am getting (both from LFS) an auto ozone dryer. Here is how it works:

Most ozone dryers are $7-800+ and have dual dryers, when one is heating up to recharge the beads the other is in use, then it will automatically switch over. Cool, but costly.

The unit I am getting uses a timer to recharge the beads, but only has one core. Not as fancy but should still work just fine.

I will post pics when I get.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for mentioning the ORP probe; I will have to give it a good cleaning! It's been a while since I gave it a good vinegar bath.

The ozone unit and auto dryer sounds pretty nice. I'll bet you'll be able to get your ORP up once and for all...

Weird stuff I find out, really weird!

I have always heard this fairly loud snapping sound, kinda like a snap of the jaws or pincers of something.

I only heard it at night with the tank lights out, but never saw any missing fish or tell-tale signs of a _____________shrimp (forgot their name).

Well, yesterday I am watching the tank mid afternoon, and I hear the noise again, I look up and see the female clown (5+ years old, and 3 inches long) snapping her jaws on what seems to be some sort of food, but I am too late to see exactly what it was. Definitely the same noise, I always was sometimes suspect of my plumbing, my 4-way or something, but I could never pin-point it.

Ever heard of something like that before?

So it was the female clown making the noises all along huh? I noticed a similar sound in my tank late last night when I was sitting in the living room trying to sleep off my chest cold.

I will have to set up my camcorder with the night vision one night and see if I can pinpoint the source.

I've had the same sound in my little tank as well, and I also feared a mantis shrimp. After treating with Interceptor for red bugs, I was pretty confident that no mantis would have survived, yet I continued to hear that sound at night. I, too, have a pair of true perculas, so perhaps you've solved the mysterious noise in my tank as well. Thanks!

You guys really think that perculas can make that much noise? Do tell if you find out for sure.

I know they can make that noise, I saw it!

little blue gt, how often do you hear that noise? and is it from chomping on some food?

Every night after lights out.

This was the first ime I heard it during the middle of the day. It really looked like she was chomping on something.

I heard the noise, looked up saw the clown, looked away, then when I looked back about 1/4 second later I heard the noise again at exactly the same time that I saw the clown chomping on something.

I was too far away to see what was being eaten, or chomped on.

How do I know the noise wasn't a coincidence with the clown chomping? The noise was exactly the same time as the chomping, and the noise that I hear at night is from the location that she sleeps in (in a wiggly sort of way).
