250 watt SE MH lamps compared

I'm trying to decide between Reeflux 10K and 12K. Does anyone have a picture of 10K with actinics? Has anyone switched between the two and notice a difference in coral growth?

Thanks.

I suggest this be made a sticky, due to its relevance. This would awnser a lot of peoples " what will this bulb look like' question.

Thanks for the picture phishlet. Do you know what the par ratings are for the 10K vs 12K? Can you tell a difference in growth between the two bulbs?

Sanjay has PAR tests for the 10k lamp but not the 12k yet. I am very interested in seeing how the 12k fares in such a test so I hope Sanjay will be able to test it soon.

The 10k seems much brighter to the eye but much of this can be deceiving. Overall I like the color better of the 12K as a stand alone lamp but the 10k with good actinic supplementation looks real nice.

I ran the 10ks for a while on my tank but then my acrylic tank sprung a leak and I had to tear the whole thing down and set it back up in a new tank. So my tank doesn't look like it does in the picture above anymore. Needless to day, that was stressful on the corals and my tank is still recovering.

I'm running the 12ks now on the new setup. It's still too early to tell how the growth will compare for me. I lost some of my sps in the emergency tear down so comparisons will be more difficult.

I would love to find a bulb that is a crisp white, and lets the actinic VHOs lean it to the blue or purpleish side.

The USHIO/BLV 14K is the bulb you seek, it's crisp white... Just ask moonpod...

That does sound like a real nice lamp. I believe its only available in a DE (doubled end) variety though correct?

My Hammy 14K comes out perty crsipy white.
Just needs a little Superactinic to make all the color happen.

Ti, the super actinic is the regular actinic or the white actinic?
Thanks
BTW, I have 14k 250w hamis (icecap ballast) and 20k radiums 400w (PFOHQI). Almost the same color but the radium is little bit bluer and a lot nicer IMO

TBH, I lighting challenged. I have a PFO dual 250w Ballast. I run 2x250 Ushio 10k. They are in need a changing.

From what I can tell from your website for my ballast the XM10k would give me the highest PAR correct? and be the best bulb for my setup?

Would someone rec a different 10k bulb? I really don't like the blue colors some bulbs give off. I prefer a nice crisp white. which I think my Ushio's are giving me atm.

Does PAR play a huge role in SPS growth?

If you don't like the Ushio you could try an XM10k. it's not a blue bulb.

Yes.

Yes.

Its not that I dont like the Ushio's. I do like them. But they dont have as high of PAR on my ballast (Dual PFO) as the XM would correct?

If you were me and had a Dual PFO ballast what 10k bulb would you buy?

I wish someone would say, because I have a PFO ballast the best bulbs to run would be???... it would really help narrow my choices with sooo many bulbs out there.

SickReefer, The problem with that is that there is no best bulb to run. Bulbs are very subjective rather than totally objective. The highest par would mean that you need to run 6500K Iwasaki bulbs, but you want 10,000K, now the problem is that not all 10,000k bulbs look the same, so you need to find the ones that you like the look of, acutally if you read the CCCT results on most metal halide tests 10,000k bulbs are not very close to 10,000k, some very from around 8,000k to unmeasurable, like most 20,000k bulbs (they are to monochromatic).

So the best bulb for you to run is the one you like the look of that give your tank enough par for your corals to thrive.

I would use the XM0K.

sweet, thanks I was leaning that way over ushio's for cost as well and from what I saw from the chart. I will try them out.

Thanks for the help.

One more ? for everyone, what is the cheapest place to order online?

I just ordered 5 bulbs Coralreef Reeflux. They are 3 250 12,000 and 2 400 watt 12,000. I currently run Ushios 250 watt and they look a little yellow to me, especially without the actinics on. I did not want to go with 20,000k's to blue. Hopefully this will be what I am looking for.

Great question to ask someone coming off Ushios, so are the 12k 250 se watters too blue for your liking?

Also do they seem dim?

Thanks.

No, I like the look of the 12,000k's . My Ushios started to look a little yellow to me, and they are 10,000k. They do not seem quite as bright as the Ushios, but the bluish coloring may have something to do with that. I am getting ready to hook up my 12,000k 400 watters pretty soon. I am currently running 3 250 watt 12,000k Reeflux bulbs. The 400 watters are also 12,000 k reeflux. That will give me approx 1550 watts of Mh halide and 4 72" VHO actinics running off of Ice cap ballasts.
1 250 watt ballast and two 400 ballasts are Blueline from Champion lighting the other 2 250 watt ballasts are old style Ice cap ballasts.
I have been waiting to hook my 400 watt ballasts up until I got a bigger chiller. I just bought a 1/2 horse Aqua-Logic chiller and hooked it up last week. It is not working properly and they are supposed to send me a replacement out within the next two weeks.
