I thought mantis were considered a nuscense...i think they are pretty though. Is there a forum for people that have a hard time killing aptasia?
 
I know they have really good eye sight. I know they have a really fast and powerful claw. just out of stupid curiousity what would happen if this thing hit a person in the nuckels? could it fracture bone or would it just hurt really bad? I imagine it would hurt??
 
Thanks alot 30mini!!! I have never heard of spearing what is that, is it as force full as smashing? By the way I just woke up and reread this thread. I could not stop laughing. It sounds like I am being sarcastic in my first post and in my second post i am just wasteing peoples time while taking up space. Thank-u for seeing through these entries i made when i was tired! By the way what is a stomopodiatrist(i spelled it right when i was looking) i tryied looking it up on dictionary.com but it just looked at me like i was ordering a 1/2 newtoner(1/4 pounder) at a Mcdonalds in America. I also did a search on google and i just got pointed back to this forum. Stomopodiatrist must be real though if godolaytulus works at berklely...unless it is somthing hippie related.

P.s. I kill all the aptasia in my reef tank, even move rocks, except 1 animal...i cannot bring my self to kill heshe. I figure if it has lived this long what makes it less important then my quadricolor or my crispia?
 
Dr. Roy is a Stomatopodiatrist... he research's and studies stomatopods for a living. Check out Roy's list, a sticky at the top of the page, and you'll see that there are spearer type mantis as well as smasher. But, the smashers can also spear depending on how they feel like hitting you. If they are trying to go after something fleshy, they will throw out the spear at the last minute to try and snare it in. If they go after a snail, they will just smash, and try to kill that way. Dr. Roy can give you a better explanation on it. I don't know nearly as much as him, but I am learning slowly through his posts on his research and reading what I can on the net.

How about the largest one. How much damage could it inflict on a human?
 
Well, the largest of all Stomatopods is the L. Maculata, and from what Dr. Roy has said, people have had to have their arm amputated b/c of a bacteria that infects the apendage that the animal has gone after. I'm sure that a large O. Scyllarus could easily break bone if it tried to.
 
I believe it was a finger, and part of the problem was that the mantis stabbed he person in the knuckle and the tip broke off in there.

Here are some pictuers.
Dr.Roy was just saying his worst injury was he had his finger sliced open by the tail spine on a large L. maculata, and I would imagine that if a big smasher wacked your finger it could break the bone. Most of the ones that you will hear about being kept will just exert a good hurt to you, if they smack you. If it decides to make a slashing attack then you are goign to need the Betadine and band-aid.
 
I hand fed my N. Wennera before. Not a big deal! He was very gentle taking silversides from me. You can do it with some smaller species with caution... but I wouldn't advise it with the larger
 
I have one in a 15 gallon reef set up, and another in a 15 gallon that has one monster chunk of Tonga branch, and a normal output strip light.

As to hand feeding it depends on the animal. My N.wennera I always hand fed and the G.chigra I have now I don't trust to do that.
