260g cube build

Believe it or not the liquid nails slid after 2 hours. I couldn't easily lift the tiles up but once rotated verticle they slipped. Had to end up sandwidching the tiles between wood screwed it in the grout seems. here is a pic..

Tilework

Tilework

hey speedstar,

I work a lot with tile. If you dont mind a suggetion.Go to home depot and get some hardiback board it comes in 3x5, 1/4 inch thicknest get the screws that are for the hardiback .Nail it to the wood and get the thinset paste in the bucket (set 1) apply to the hardiback and wait it will be a better bond because tile and paste have a hard time bonding to wood and it works sometimes and sometimes when you least expect it, one pops off . So for a stronger hold , trust me that hardiback board will satisfy you beyond belief. And while you wait for it to dry ,work on something and in no time you could finish your MASTERPIECE, looking forward to this one because I love TILEWORK, btw your tank is awesome , so I know this is going to be kick butt. get to it , looking to see some more pic soon.

thanks for the info, i'll use it next time. When I lost patients I went to the hobby store got a bunch of 5minute epoxy and epoxied them all in place down the grout lines that will be covered with grout.

Not much progress made this week other than deciding a new location for the tank. I now get to try to snake 1.5" spaflex over an existing cieling through joists. Ahhh the fun. tank should be much more pleasing in this location.

spaflexing

spaflexing

Glad to see things are going well with the tile , but man spaflexing through the ceiling now that is going to be some project, so good luck.

Just a guestamation, how long do you think it will be before you have it done and can begin the addition of water and transfer of livestock?

The tank has made it to its resting place, I have just cut my corner tile pieces and will sert them tonight. Grout should be complete before the weekend.

Target date is sept 1st for completion, lighting might hold it up though.

Speedstar,

Looks good and Sept 1 is around the corner,

What light are you going to get/or use? Are you going to make a tile canopy?

Lighting is still up in the air. I'm leaning towards only 2 400w MH 10k's plus t5 blue. Then putting it on a roatation device to spin it 355 degrees and then back. Effectivelly covering the reef at half the cost of 4MH's that it should have.

Here is abit better pic, It should really start looking nice once the grout is done and in place.

I still have to clean and polish all the scratches etc out of the tank. I swore i'd never do another acrylic, but here i am again. Couldn;t beat the tank price so i took it.

Got one side of the tank cleaned and polished. Took abotu 6 hours.. 2 sodes togo. Built the clear mesh screen for the top to keep the fish in and the nwanted kids toys out. Also got the grout into the tile. It is plumbed to the basement. I have to drill three more holes. I am going to have 2 CL's one on a sequence barracuda and 4way and one on a iwaki and eductors.

why so low ?

Perfect height for viewing from couch, will be able to get a nice top down prospective if standing that the SPS corals IMO look best at. This way the kids can stand and look in it also.

I bought the do any size window kit up to 60X60. I cut the side rails as needed put in the corner pieces and stretched the mesh across. I actually pulled it to tight and distorted the frame some, but im OK with it. Yes I got the mesh from Jim. It passes the toss coins in test fine and repels em all ;)

Amanda"s craft room was a quick toss together. Just built a temp desk, shelves and put up some peg board. I didn;t have much of a budget to work with. (i boougt corals instead shhhhhh). All her tote cases are full. I actually think in machines and supplies the totals more than my tanks.

The mesh is framed with a standard window kit. Lifts on and off. Kinda trick how it ended up recessed. The manufacture did a terrible IMO job of a eurobrace and layed it on top of one another. However this came in handy for the overall screened look and resting, it comes out about flush now.

Also I have decided on a lighting scheme for this tank, one bulb in a lumenarcIII. UHI-S1000BL
UPDATE just also ordered the new coralvue reflector will be comparing the two.

picked up all the needed spa flex, unions, bulk heads, ball valves and hard line for what i drew up for plumbing (nope don;t have a pic or cool cad drawing, it is on the back of a McD's bag) so the glueing shall begin soon. Most likely not till wed night work a double tomorrow. I also had the Barracuda and Iwaki running the water in the tub to test the seals for leaks all good no drips. Now my daughter wants them on the tub for every bath......

Basically the Barracuda will run on a OM 4-way 12hours/day, The return pump will goto a OM super squirt running 4 penductors continous, the iwaki will run CL to 2 eductors 6 hours/day.

Slow going this weekend, I made some portland/sd/salt rocks, dropped one batch and brok into a ton of pieces bottom fell outta mold box. Was able to get the plumbing through the ceiling/floor and have the drain plumbed from tank to sump. Also the return is fully plumbed. On the CL's i was able to drill remaining needed holes, add bulk heads and plumb the intake and valves still need to do the out's from pumps to tank.

Spa-flex is a PIA to work with. I would have been done had i just used hard pipe.

Weekend went pretty well. I started by melting the slat out from my DIY rocks with hot water. Whoever doesn;t believe they are pourus is crazy check out the video. HOW DO YOU EMBED QUICKTIME? Video will take some time to load.
