265G Project

The tanks still up and running, my pc died so no new pictures unless I take them with my phone.

My wife and I were blessed with the birth of twins six months ago so the tank has taken a bit of a backseat. I am managing to put in more time on it as the kids seemed to have settled into a routine.

Heres a picture of the tank a couple of months ago.

Picked up some new toys for he tank. I'll be putting these on my top two closed loop discharges.

Hey Robb, The tank is looking good. I was wondering what you think of your protien skimmer? I'm looking at getting the same skimmer but i've heard mixed reviews about it. Just would like to hear your input.

Thanks, it's been a long road to get to this point and I have a long way to go.

The skimmer is a love hate relationship. I'm running mesh wheels in my pumps which have restarting troubles, which I'm sure you've read is a common problem. I typically won't shut it down unless I'm cleaning the pumps or main body. If I'm just cleaning the cup then I'll pull it off and let the skimmer overflow over the neck. I've been debating switching over to pinwheels to cure the restarting problems but haven't got around to it yet so I can't comment on performance impacts. I've also installed a self-cleaning head on it.

However, that being said. This thing is a beast when running, I have zero doubts that it will be able to handle my tank when it's heavily stocked.

The people that have changed to pinwheels have had great success and say the skimmer works far better. Who makes the self-cleaning head that you have? I would love to see some pictures.

I picked up a retrofit kit from Avast Marine. I've been running it a couple of weeks now and so far I'm really happy with it. Ill see if I can snap some pictures of it.

I managed to get the Moeceans plumped in today, I need to pick up some 45s for the returns. I'd like flow to get a little deeper into the tank. One of the cords was a tas short so i need to find an extension for that as well.

I have to apologize, I never did get around to taking that picture for you.

The tank has gone through a decline the last six months or so. The biggest single incident was a ballast going bad and causing the GFCI on that circuit to trip, which unfortunately also had a heater on it. The heater that remained operational on another circuit wasn't enough to maintain the temps and consequently I lost just about all the coral in the tank, all the fish managed to make it through. So much for redundancy... I thought I was being wise splitting my lighting and heaters across several circuits.

Secondly my sump is offline and has been for awhile. I had a leak in one of my drains at the most inopertune time so I just shut it in. I thought I would rebuild the sump while it was off-line, it's taking a lot more time then expected.

What fun would reefing be if all went well :)

Read the whole thread, only to find you bumped it after being dormant for 10 months to tell us it's gone down hill :(

Sucks to hear man, I liked your setup.

Edit: Newbie question, but how long did the tank go unnoticed? Or in another way, how often were you checking on the tank? I guess I have no idea how quickly or how long coral can live without the proper heating...

I had/have some pictures to post but I can't access photobucket here at work to attach them, I feel bad about that.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure how long the heater was off-line. When that happened we were still very busy in our first year with twins. I was checking the tank late in the evening at the time the lights are generally turning off so it didn't click that one wasn't on when it should have been.

Ah, new kids will always ruin things! Just kidding of course. That would also explain why it went unnoticed though. Gotta have the priorities straight. Good luck with it.

Well, the tank came down this week. Not to sell off or get out of the hobby but to figure out a different way of doing things.

On the list of things do:
A) Rebuild Sump - it's been off-line for a year.
B) Re-plumb the tank, quite a few leaks have developed for some reason.
C) Take full advantage of my Apex
D) Figure out a better way to run reactors
E) Figure out my lighting situation - fix what's causing the issues with my ballasts or switch to a different form of lighting.
F) Aptasia - I had two file fish that took months to start eating them and once the tank was looking great they up and died, the aptasia is back with vengeance. If I don't get this problem sorted the next step is to just burn my house down, that'll kill it!
G) RO/DI still doesn't work correctly along with the auto top off "“ the solenoid valve no longer holds back water, the secondary float valves works fine but I like having the redundancy of two valves.
H) Aquascaping "“ I hate what I have.
I) Canopy, time to make this thing look good.

Damn, that's quite the list "“ now I'm really depressed.
J) Consume vodka meant for tank"¦..

I really hate the smell of a tank tear down .

Hope you get things back together soon.
I have found that the more simple that I can run everything the easier time I have with it. On that note I'm working to simplify even more.

Good luck on the return of your system.

I was actually relieved when I took it down, it was causing stress. Now that I've begun the rebuild I've become excited about th tank again.

Part of the upgrade plan is to replace my lighting. I'm thinking about going LED, any advice on a unit/s that would work well for a 30" deep tank that can be hung a respectable distance off the water surface? IE: I don't want the lighting 2" off the water surface. :D

Thanks!

take a look at rapidled, i am currently in the process of putting together a 30'' deep tank and they seem to be the best bet since you can choose your lenses
