280+ Gallon Shark Tank

I did some work down there yesterday. I have my stand almost complete, ill post pics later. Also I cut into my houses main drain and added a slop sink to the room and added the drain for the wet bar. Im not complete yet but I will be soon.

becasue...

my tanks ordered! arrives on saturday. I'm pretty excited to get it down there and see how it looks.

I see most people paint there tank. Ill have two sides visible and two that need to be painted. the back and front left. I was thinking, do people insulate their tanks to help with maintaining temperature?

Could I take that ridgid insulation, cut it to size, paint that and stick it on the tank to both have a background and insulate? is there any value in doing this?

Not really much use to insulate. The glass/acrylic of the aquarium actually has its own insulation value. And if there is enough temperature difference to cause condensation on the glass then you have a much more serious problem with indoor climate control to take care of. I would just go ahead and paint the two sides.

ok sounds good, thanks for the fast response. I'm leaning towards black paint.

I was hoping to have a big tank to throw a bunch of live rock in, but now that I actually am doing the plumbing, etc I quickly found out I do not have the room. I found online some tall rectangle 20 gallon containers that ill use for RO auto top off water and to mix salt for small water changes. Ill have to do small ones more frequently then any big changes.

I ordered 150 pounds of live rock. Im not sure how much that is. I dont want my tank to be full of live rock since its meant for sharks to swim around. but I do want the added bio filtratoin to go with the wet dry filter. I just dont know if 150 pounds is a lot or a little in terms of phyical surface area.

Im thinking on the back wall ill a some sort of an arch to have space to add any corals i may get, places for thinks to hide, etc. I dont want the arch to go the full length though so theres plenty of room to turn and swim. Ill see what the 150 looks liek when it comes.

The guy I bought a few items from has a ton of live rock that I might get some pieces to seed the tank. there was one in particular that was a large rock with a cave/tunnel in it and had a colony of mushrooms growing on it. I wouldnt seed and cycle the tank with the mushroom piece but I might but that piece ot have him hold for me.

Ok I have a few updates, first I rushed to get my stand finished on Saturday because the tanks coming at 6 on Saturday.

I still need to get the foam to put on top of the plywood.

Now unfortunately, I don't have after pictures of the tank. They didn't build it right so I had to send it back. Two issues, first I specified that the euro bracing must be over four inches on the two sides that have the built in wall over it. Since they didn't, I wouldn't have been able to open the first lid.

I ended up deciding I'd just take the tank with a discount and figure out how to make a lid. However, after getting it in the truck we saw that they put the star fire on the wrong side... So we had to then put it back in the truck. At least we figured it out before we got home.

Now I have to wait until August 2nd, get a buddy with a truck and lifters again...

Though the only good thing is now ill definitely make sure I have auction cups!! I can't imagine how we would have moved it without them

Oh, and I did pick up my 150 pounds of reef rock, 280 pounds of sand, 100pounds of salt... The reef rocks sounded broken so I'll check them out today. I guess I can get a bucket and start making them reef rocks without the tank

Here's a pic of a sample reef rock. Can anyone identify region or comment on it? It seems pretty porous. I was hoping for some pieces w swim through or caves. These more like giant pieces of coral. I might buy a few choice pieces as a base.[

And a pic of some sand, a fine crushed coral

From what I can see of the tank in that last photo with it in the pickup truck, it looks really nice! What dimensions did you go with ? Looks like a nice footprint!

The Rock looks very good, light and porous too. Might be able to tell where it's from if you can share which vendor/company you got it from?
I think most of that type of dry rock is taken from inland quarries of ancient reefs. Some companies are based in Florida where there is an abundance of these calcium carbonate, or limestone, beds.

Everything looks fantastic btw!!

The tank is/was 6 feet by 3 feet and 2 feet tall. The rock was also from glass cages. I took a gamble on it because it was less than two bucks a pound and no shipping since I got a tank from them.

well now that I have 150 pounds of live rock, and no tank, I was thinking about starting to get the live rock going.

Since my live rock is all 'bleached' Im assuming it definitely doesnt need any sorta curing process to get the old critters out.

What is the best method to start making this into live rock?

If I just got a 55 gallon trash can, is that enough water volume for this? I can throw in a heater and my vortex for circulation. Dont they sell those bottles of bacteria to start the live rock going? I dont know if what I need to do is different sinec it isnt live rock yet. Most of what ive read online is about how to get teh cycle going with existing live rock.

I could go buy a piece of actual live rock, that will seed them right? Ill do some searches today and read up on this.

Do I need to wash the rock first?

Does it need to be RODI water for this purpose?

Some dry rock is high in phosphate. There are a number of threads that can explain the entire process better and in more detail, but I'll give it a shot.
I think for 150 pounds you might need two containers. Mix up saltwater with RODI to reef salinity. Add Either a piece of LR, Bacteria In a bottle, or nothing. Add a source of ammonia, to "feed" the bacteria, or start the nitrogen cycle. You could literally feed the barrels with pellets, or drop a raw table shrimp in the barrels.
Monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate. As the weeks progress, you'll see the ammonia drop to zero and the nitrite rise, then the nitrite lower, eventually to zero, and nitrates rocket up. Once the ammonia and nitrite zero out, you might begin doing water changes to remove phosphate. Or while the nitrogen cycle is taking place, if the phosphate levels are high, you might hook up a phosban, or similar, reactor with GFO in it to help reduce phosphate while cycling the rock.
It usually takes 6-8 weeks IME, for the entire process to happen. Also depending on how low you'd like your phosphate level and if you're going to keep a reef/coral, or just Sharks/FOWLR.
HTH.

Protein skimmer is here!

Though wifey says I'm never allowed to open one of Jeff from life reefs boxes in the house haha. I'm gonna try opening it I'm a garbage bag

Everyone - Make this post a sticky. This is a lesson on how to open life reef products. I'll first repost how I opened the filter, then the new improved way to open the skimmer!!

The wrong way....

In regards to your water changing set up. It sounds like a separate tank from your main set up. Just a thought and I've seen this done before. If you left the second barrel in line with your tank and filtration system then when your ready for a water change you just turn a bypass valve leaving the 20gallon tank shut off from the system. Then you can drain it, refill with RO water, add salt and place it back inline. Pretty heinous idea if you ask me.

Hi everyone, well I have good news and bad news. I went to pick up my tank, again, from glasscages. They, again, did not make it correctly. This blows my mind because I have them full 3d models, blue prints, lengthy phone calls and emails confirming everything, etc.

I do have the tank, the driver told me 'you always get the built Friday tanks' and said it was pretty normal to have them built wrong. but twice! The other person picking up also did not get a tank the way they requested.

Looking at the tank closely, I feel like they just took my old one apart, and switched the starfire so it was on the right side. It looks like it was taken apart and put back together becasue theres gouges all over the corners of the glass. It almost looks like they use some sort of fixture or device to move the tanks and it holds them clamped down, and it chews into the glass.

At this point its in its spot, and its heavy so its not going anywhere. Im going to have to pay seperately to have some sort of custom lids fabricated. The point of my custom was was to have larger bracing so my upper walls didnt block the lids. and I guess now instead of my beautiful corner tank I have to add wood molding on the corners to cover the very visible chewed up edges.

The worst part is they arent even responding to my emails anymore about it.Ill be pursuring other avenues to deal with them...

Ill post pics later
