Looking at a skimmer. What would be a good skimmer for this tank? Also the LFS said I shouldn't replace the Balls with LR because it wouldn't have a light source. Would I have to mod the tank to give it light? or was he just blowing smoke out his hiney?

LR has no NEED for light.. that would be only for the coraline algae.

The reason bioballs should be replaced is its more difficult later on to control nitrites/nitrates due to build up on the balls. The LR will have organizms that help to keep that broken down.

Think about it this way... would you rather have a biological filter that is man-made? Or one that has been tested by mother nature herself? I would choose the latter.

No need to mod the tank to replace the bioballs.

you might want to read up on how to "cook" live rock. This will give you some insight to how it will effect your rock if there is no light.

No advice on the skimmer though.. Im not a guru :)

Well Why do you need to cook it? If Im getting 60 lbs of live rock in my shipment Wouldnt I just stick part of that LR in the back?

I just meant that you should read that for the effects it will have on the rock (which isnt bad).

Not that you should actually "cook" the rock.

cooking the rock has nothing to do with heating the rock up... do some research on it and you will see what I mean. A basic run down of what cooking rock is: Keeping the rock in a lightless, yet normally heated, environment to stop the growth of algae (in most cases) for a period of 6-8 weeks.
