Ok, I am starting on a new tank and figured I would do it in this forum since it is going to be a clownfish species tank. I am hoping to pair up two onyx clowns with an anemone and just leave the tank with them only. Any advice would be appreciated!!!! I will have some pics shotrly on the tank being built along with the stand and canopy and more.
 
My first post as a member will be the first post on your thread! Haha anyways... first you have to decide which type of clown you want and which type of anenome. For the clowns your gonna want something with a small max size since your tanks only a 29 gallon. Which would be a true perc at 3.1" max. False percs get to 3.7" maroon and clarkiis can get up to 5.7" so I would definitely go with the true percs. As far as the anenome 90 percent of people will tell you not to have one in a tank that small and new especially with you having no experience. I myself have a Bubble Tip Anenome (BTA). I put it in my tank on the second day. Before my tank had even begun to cycle along with 2 clowns and some zoanthid corals and a cleaner shrimp. (I know what everybody that read this is gonna think ima big dummy) but everything is alive and thriving. I propogated my zoanthids and now a month later have a mother colony and 2 frags that came from it. All have grown new polyps. And the BTA is doing great has even grown an inch in diameter in the last month. So I'm not gonna tell you not to get one. But I do recommend the BTA. But you should at least cycle your tank all the way and read on how to pick a healthy anenome from your LPS (local pet store) they say you need a big tank for anenomes. Mine is doing fine for now but once he grows up maybe in a year or so ima have to upgrade mine and you will to if you want to keep it alive and healthy for more than a year. Also get your clownfish at about an inch but your anenome at 3 or 4 inches because the clown fish are rough with the anenomes. And if you don't plan on breeding clownfish you should really just get one. Because one of them is going to become a female and take over the anenome her own spot and not let the smaller one (the male) anywhere near it. Pretty soon your just gonne be watching one of your clownfish beat up the other one especially in a tank that small. And then your gonna feel bad for the little guy. So I suggest unless you get a bigger tank then only get one clownfish. Also your gonna need 4 to 5 watts per gallon for the anenome. A blue actinic 65 watt and a white 65 watt both lights on timers. And take a look at clownfish and anenomes natirals habitat. They live in the lagoon in the wild which has fine sand and a few rocks that they hover over. To have a reef tank with them in it would not be natural for them. Also a lot of people say to keep the tem around 76 to 78 degrees F but in the coral reefs around the world the average water temp is from 80 to 89 degrees. So I keep mine at 82 and everything does great.

Wow I feel dumb I must have skipped reading the part about the onyx clowns. I havnt read anything about them before but you should def check their max sizeand agresivenesstowards eachother before commiting to them
 
I have done much research. I have been in reefkeeping for about 7 years now so I'm not new to the subject. Just trying to find out if anyone has any experience with this size aquarium and and the such. I have heard of clowns hosting other corals as well, so I know I am not limited to just an anemone. Not trying to come across as a know it all... believe me, I know I don't know all of it :)
 
Well I have a 29 gallon with 2 clowns and an anenome. But if your giving up on the anenome clown will also host in sarcphyton leather corals since you have experience with a reef tank those might work out better for you. Plus when they get big you can also propogate them
 
cool, good to hear that it has been done then! I am painting the stand and canopy this week so i'll post some pics when that is done. I am planning on building an internal overflow and sculpting the rock to hide it. My goal is to have the tank so you can't see any equip in it.

Do you guys happen to have a sump set up with yours? If so, how is it set up? I am trying to build a refugium into mine, as well as having a place for my skimmer, heater, and a kalk reactor.

I'll get some pics up shortly as to my progress!!
 
My 29g has a nice big BTA, 2 clowns, 3 other fish and about 30 other coral.

Plenty of room in there for clowns and a BTA.
 
No sump in mine just hang on prizm skimmer and hang on filter both rated for up to 100 gallons. Heater and a small powerhead. Hiding everything would be cool though since its a small tank.

ok.. minor set back this weekend... I was drilling the tank and the glass shattered!! Apparently they make all of the panels on a 29 tempered so I am going to have to replace that before I go any furthur :)
 
I have a 20H mixed reef with a BTA & SPS both competing for top of the rocks. I run carbon 24/7 in the tank just incase someone wants to do chemical warfare on each other. I also have a sump but I did not have enough room in the sump for a fuge. I run a 150W 14k MH over the tank.

The amen does not really seem to bother the SPS much either. When it first was put in the tank it walked & destroyed a few prized pieces of coral (not my fault, I orderd an LTA but got a BTA) but after it settled it has not moved in ...oh I'd say 6 months? It expands & touches a few sps every now & then but it has not done any harm, I think its just the foot that kills the sps.

Where are you getting your onyx from, rod? His onyx are great & host right away! If your looking for designer clowns bones is raising some really amazing picasso's now too.
 
I've always thought it would be nice to have ~3 29gs set into a wall like portholes with 3 different clown pairs / anemones in them. Possible project for the future for you? hehe

Jov... yeah I was thinking of ordering them from rod. Not to sure yet though. I would like to get everything going and see from there.
