29 gallon biuld Thread

You might need more than 3 weeks of cycling before you are ready to add cuc.

I posted on your other thread about the long nosed hawkfish. If you like the look of the hawkfish try a geometric hawkfish. It's really an perchlet. Acts just like a hawkfish without the eating of inverts.

added my clean up crew today, over 50 snails from reefcleaners.org including ceriths, Florida ceriths, nassarius, and some sand sifters(forgot the name). adding the clown pair next week and ill start to add my first corals soon as well. everything is going well so far :)

There's no time limit on the cycle. Just check your levels every other day and see when your cycle is finished.

Cool! Glad everything is going well. Pics ?

Ok sorry no pics I've tried but I can't figure how to ipload from my phone and I don't have a computer so..... Tank is looking good, there's some type of hair algae that none of my snails or hermits eat so If like suggestions on hair algae eaters ( phosphate reactor on its way!) yesterday I added the first fish to the system and they seem to be doing great! I added the clownfish from my old 10 gallon reef which I then broke down as well as adding one I bought from a lfs. They both ate rods food original which I also just bought and I'm really liking. Hopefully I can get the goby and the fire fish next week if I don't run into any problems with the clowns as well as add the first few coral frags. I'm really loving this tank so far and hope that it continues to mature and grow as easily as it has so Far. Thanks!

Sounds and looks good. Algae bloom will be going away soon I'm sure. Just don't let it get out of control... To upload pics download the app " tapatalk " easiest way to do it with a phone.

Nice tank... I have a 29 gallon that's pretty new, like yours! Here is a link to my build thread... check it out:
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2405506

I've just started to see some hair algae showing up, so I got a ball of chaeto and added it to my fuge and added some more snails. I'm hoping to not have to run GFO if I don't have to. In the end, if I have to run GFO, so be it, but I'm trying to avoid it if possible. I'm hoping it just runs its course.

Good luck with the tank... I'll be following along!

The algae is starting to thin today. Maybe phosphates are down? I did a WC yesterday and today it seems much less bushy. There is still that one area in the left bottom corner where that rock is too close to the glass to clean ( thought it's be far enough but I guess not) the new clownfish that I added, the one from the store, doesn't look so great. He is gasping a lot and not moving too much. He responds to food and swims around but he will eat some food then spit it out. I tried flake frozen and pellets but that's all he does. The clownfish from my old tank on the other hand is thriving and has amazing color and personality, so I'm pretty sure it's not my water, maybe it's just acclimating? It had only been In for 3 days..... Any help is appreciated, thanks!
:mixed:

Regarding your clown, mine took a while before they started eating. I would say 3-5 days. Sometimes they would eat( if they did it was very very little) or not at all. But always came up to the food. Just give it a couple more days

My clowns did the same thing with flake food when I first added them to my QT. They would take a bite of food and then spit it out. All I had at the time was flake, so I went down to my LFS and bought some frozen brine and tried mixing it with the flake. That seemed to do the trick, they both started eating like pigs! I've been slowly weaning them off of the brine (I've heard its not very nutritious). It seems now that they've started eating and are more comfortable in the tank, they'll eat pretty much anything. I think if you can get it to start eating anything it'll probably acclimate quickly. Keep us posted.

alright good news the clown has acclimated and looks great, hes starting to color up as well. this means ill be good to add my next 2 fish this weekend! im excited!

adding this weekend:
diamond goby
red firefish

I'd suggest you slow down on the fish additions & let your new tanks bioload catch up. Didn't you just add the 2 clowns 4 days ago? Wait 2--3 wks before adding another fish, & then just add one...btw, are you testing your water parameters? There's no mention of that anywhere...Instead of buying fish for awhile, invest in a good water testing kit like Salifert.

Ok so decided to take advice and go slower with additions, although I did pick up some corals last weekend that are all doing great:

Green/purple frogspawn
Mixed zoas
Green mushrooms
Favias (red/green and neon yellow and brown/ black)

Will add some more this weekend, did have an algae bloom soon after adding the fish and corals including diatoms and LOTS of cyano, it seems to have calmed down recently but is still there so I ordered a brs gfo reactor and gfo, should be here by Friday. Waiting a week after installing the Gfi then I think I'll add some more fish. One sm question though is how should I speed up coraline algae in my rock since it was all dry, some came in on the coral but is spreading really slowly, should I get one of those hard coraline algae clusters from r2g or something else, also just remembered but I am planning to set up a my fuge this weekend, should I go both caulerpa and chaeto or just one, I kinda like caulerpa better on looks and I want it to look somewhat nice. Thanks!

Edit: would a flame hawk fish work better then a longnosed hawk?

rock cured for 3 weeks in 5 gallon buckets with the koralias for circulation. will be going on a lfs run with a reefing friend of mine sunday and will post pics then, all corals still doing great.

brs gfo reactor came yesterday and is all working well. algae should hopefully start declining more then it has been.

When you get a chance look up the reef octopus bh-50 skimmer small footprint, quiet, and packs a punch. I use it for my 30g rimless mix reef, and just ordered another one for my 45g cube seahorse tank I'm working on. I use to run the coralife super skimmer, which worked ok, but had to adjust every WC. I use to have a flame angel in my 30g, that was giving to me, because a friend of mine had to move, and break down his tank. I had it for 2 years, then lost my live stock due to hurricane sandy.

I basically started from scratch, and restock my tank again. I purchased the flame again, and it was doing well. It became aggressive toward my banggai cardinal that would always have eggs, but releases it early because it was being attacked by the flame. I sold the fish to a fellow RC member.
