29 gallon tank ideas

im moving a few fish to a new tank so my 29 is going to be empty. i was thinking about doing a scorpian tank.

Pair Red Rooster Pygmy Waspfish (Hypodytes rubripinnis)
1 Fu Manchu Lionfish (Dendrochirus biocellatus)
maybe a few swiming fish that wont get eatin

The fu and the redfin will do fine together as long as the initial size differential in on the mark (we've had 1" specimens that would indeed become "fu food"). In fact, we have a juvie now and had to put a visual block between the little HOB fuge it's currently in and our juvie fuzzy lion setup as all the fuzzies want to do is eat it, and it drives them crazy that they can't get to it.

FWIW, the correct binomial for the redfin waspfish is Paracentropogon rubripinnis. Hypodytes is an older taxon that is no longer used. As for pygmy...all waspfish are small. I realize the latter is easier to spell, and possibly remember, which likely accounts for its continued usage.

Redfins are really great fish, and are fairly easy to sex, esp. as adults.

I know that's what DD calls them, but it's still not the accepted scientific name.

Yeppers, I'd say the fish on DD is a male.

As for damsels, I don't recommend keeping anything that aggressive with Scorpaeniformes, unless they're lunch. I'd be afraid the damsels might bully smaller scorps as neither will be large enuff to eat them. Maybe some chromis would do as they tend to keep any aggression between themselves or some of the larger cardinals.

We've kept bristletail filefish with waspfish and ambon scorps with no trouble.

pair Kaudern's Cardinal (Pterapogon kauderni)
3 Black Axil Chromis (Chromis atripectoralis)

would this be ok?

I apologize if I am misunderstanding you, but are you suggesting that you would have all of the those fish listed below in your 29 (2 waspfish, 1 lionfish, 2 cardinals, and 3 chromis)? That is WAY to may fish! Also LiveAquaria says that chromis and cardinal fish are not compatible with scorps/lionfish (guessing that they will get eaten).

At the very most you should only have 4 fish in a tank that size. Maybe try the matted filefish as your final fish? So your final fish list would look like:

-Pair Red Rooster Pygmy Waspfish (Hypodytes rubripinnis)
-1 Fu Manchu Lionfish (Dendrochirus biocellatus)
-1 Matted filefish

Honestly though if it was my tank, I would only have the three fish you listed in your first post. I would not push my luck with a fourth.

While chromis don't add a whole lot to a bioload, I agree by saying that is a lot of fish. But, finding fish that fit that size tank that won't be eaten is tough.

I've never kept Kaudern's, but they should be a good choice. Maybe better than the Chromis as they don't need as much space.
