29g AGA build/journal

I can tell your a very meticulous person. Very clean set up !! BUT stop turning your fuge into another reef. LOL ; )

What size tank is your sump?

BUT stop turning your fuge into another reef. LOL ; )

:lolspin: It is starting to head that way. The tank is 40g and the fuge part is about 20g. The chaeto is starting to really take off and cover the corals that are in there. I'm thinking about pulling the chaeto out and getting a bunch of different kinds of macros. Probably won't be as effective in terms of nutrient export, but it will look cooler :D.

Just subscribed to the thread.......absolutely awesome!
i will def use your set up as a template when i get the opportunity to get my set up going
unfortunately the more research i do the more i seem to be coming to terms that i may have to wait until i either move out of my apt or figure out a way to set up a similar setup in my office room area which gets insanely hot during the summer so don't think its gunna happen....also i noticed earlier in the the thread you said you would be getting an ro/di unit soon....what were u using before? I apologize for my noob *** questions im trying my hardest to figure out where i can set one up and yours is perfect

Brklyn,

Yeah the amount of information on this hobby is mind-boggling. At some point you just have to give in and pull the trigger on something :uzi:.

Do you have a tank now, or have you had one in the past? There are a lot of "all-in-one" options that work well in apts, as they are smaller and more mobile (biocube, red sea max, etc.). My last tank was a 36g standard tank w/o a sump and I had it running for 5 years. A sump is nice because you can hide most of the equipment there and it adds to the total water volume. There is something to be said about having all the water in one glass box without any holes in it though (i.e. no sump), especially in an apartment.

As for the ro/di, I have the unit but am waiting to install it. I will be adding a softwater system to my house and also a utility sink, so I want to do it all at the same time. Up until now I have been getting my water from the local supermarket that sells ro/di for 27cents per gallon. Kind of a PITA hauling 5g jugs every other week, but it has gotten the job done. Feel free to ask any questions you have. BTW, I will be visiting NY for the first time later this year :D

I get what you mean about just pull the trigger.....at some point I may just dive in (pardon the pun lol)...im def starting to annoy my family and friends with all my nano talk.
The heat issue still remains tho :(
Your going to love NY! Yummy food and great sites to see. The aquarium in coney island is pretty cool, as is coney island (kids will love it).

The background is spray painted with krylon fusion. I have a current FTS but my laptop crashed so currently I have no way to convert it from RAW format :(

Brkyln....have you considered running a chiller? Also, there is some very efficient equipment available for nanos (LEDs, low wattage pumps, etc) that will help keep the heat down. My tank runs VERY cool and uses less than 100 watts when running full blast (minus the heater). Unfortunately it runs so cool that the heater is on almost non stop.

Oh, and no kids on the NY trip, they are staying with grandma and grandpa :) Are you a yankees fan or a mets fan? Answer wrong and I will ban you from my thread...lol

I looked into chillers but mucho dinero! I'm not as worried about the acuak equipment heat as much as I am worried about the ambient room temperature....it's gets pretty warm during the summer...eh still on a research kick so hopefully I'll pull the trigger soon....
I'm a Yankee fan all the way.... If that's the wrong answer than I'm banning myself lol

Well at least we both like reef tanks :hammer:

I just want to say your photography is great, very nice setup.
Thanks!

Great build Ben! was following on NR, but haven't seen it in a while, such progress!

Wow just realized my last update was 7 months ago. I've been super busy with a non-reef related project, but that is done now so I'm looking forward to spending some more time with the tank in the near future. I will try to take/post some current pics in the next few days.

Until then, here is a cool sea slug hitchhiker I found awhile ago (Oxynoe sp.)...

im not sure if you've mentioned, but what is your CUC consisted of?

1/2 of this plus some hermits and a few turbos.

Pretty sure I have the coolest/smartest 3yr old out there... :)

Mangrove Refugium

Mangrove Refugium

I pulled all of the existing liverock from my refugium and replaced it with dryrock. I went back and forth on this decision as I didn't want to lose the biodiversity of the rock but I was getting tired of battling Caulerpa serrulata and having it go sexual every few weeks. I plan on having just a bunch of mangroves back there and then maybe throwing in a few Bangaii Cardinals once the root systems are established.

As of now, I have the refuguim shut off from the rest of the system. I want to let it cycle on its own, and make sure phosphate levels are acceptable before I turn it on to the rest of the system. Here are some pics;

Pistol Whipped

Pistol Whipped

I picked up a pistol shrimp about 6 months ago, acclimated him, dropped him in the tank, and literally never saw him again. I figured he was a goner but last night I saw him scurry out from under a ball of chaeto in the return section of my sump :) He's taken up shelter under my return pump and I'd rather not tear out all of the equipment to catch him. So far I've tried putting some food in a cup tipped sideways (and patiently waiting) but he doesn't seem to be taking the bait. Any other ideas?
