29g Anemone Tank

Hey guys, what's up?

I am in the process of setting up a 29g anemone tank, and I though I would share some pictures of the build and later somje of the completed tank once it is stocked and all.

So far I have drilled the CLS returns and fitted them with bulkheads and locline. I need to drill another hole at the bottum for the intake. I am thinking a Mag 5 or 7 for the Closed loop, and it will be run on a Squid SCWD.
Here's a picture of the full set up thus far.

For the overflow, I plan on cutting a hole to fit a 1 1/4" bilkhead in the top center and place a servace skimmer around it. It will end up looking somthing like this.

For the sump, I plan on getting the glass cut at my LGS and completly using the bottum of the stand as one large sump. I am planning on haveing a very large Fuge filled with a DSB, Live Rock, and Cheato. I will also have a media rack some where so I can run carbon. I don't think that I will need to run a skimmer if I have a rather large Fuge, unless you all think otherwise? For the return I am thinking a Mag7 plumbed to a Squid SCWD and have the retuens hang on the back of the tank.
Here's a MS Paint drawing of what I would like to accomplish with the sump.

For lighting I have a ballast for two 96w/65w PC bulbs. I am probably going to add a 150w MH to the mix also.

Ok for this tank's livestock I am thinking...
A RBTA
a pair of Brown Saddleback clowns (I saw one at my LFS and OMG, beautiful fish)
I also want alot of Zoanthids, Mushrooms, and a variety of LPS corals.
I want to also keep several other types of fish, but I don't knwo which ones yet.

So....what do you guys think?

awesome. great to hear you are planning another tank after placing frags in your 20H a couple weeks ago. with that ballast can you run one 96quad and add another one later on.

I would love to do that, but they won't fit over the 29, it's 30" long.

BTW, it's been 3 months since adding the frags to the 20H ;)

I got the glass for my sump today.

The sump messures 28Lx10Wx13H and when it is in full opperation it will hold 8.5 gallons.

I won't be able to start working on it because I am leaveing to vacation in Orlando, Fl on Sunday and won't be back untill the following Saturday.

Also, what type of Silacone should I use to seal it?

Well, I don't know how many other fish you can keep in addition to the saddlebacks in a 29 but otherwise it sounds good. I'd also think about making sure that you have room for a skimmer in either the inlet or return compartment of your sump. You may never need it but you really don't want to be in the position of having to rebuild your sump if you do.

Yeah, but if I REALY needed a skimmer, I could always get a hang on Remora and be done with it, I wouldn't need room in the sump, I would just hang it on the back. I have already thought that part through. ;)

Now, if the display tank was bigger, I would have a larger sump with a place for an In-Sump Skimmer, but since the sump does only hold 8.5 gallons while in opperation, I don't realy need a skimmer. This isn't an SPS tank ya know. :D

As far as other fish, I'm not to worried about it being overstocked. I just want the pair of Saddlebacks, some type of Blenny, a Clown Goby, and maybe some other fish, a swimmer. I Don't know yet though, I may just stop with the Clown Goby

I have a ballast that would power two of them. 2 x 17" = 34". The tank is 30"
The 96W power quad is only 3.75" wide. you could get 2-96W side by side over your 29Gal. Just a thought.

Do you all think that would be enough light for a RBTA? I want it to have bulbs, and I don't know if that would be enough light. If I did go with the two quads, I wouldn't be able to git a MH bulb in there.

What do you guys think?

I put the glass pannels in place but I didn't glue them so here are a few pictures (the baffles arn't in there yet)

I also need to seal the inside of the stand. Suggestions on a sealent for the wood?

Hey guys, I will be using a 70w MH along with 2x65w of PC lighting. Should I use the PCs for Actinics only, or should I get 50/50s? The 70w MH bulb is an Ushio 10k.

You may have mentioned it somewhere down the line, but what kind of anemone(s) do you plan to keep? For Entacmaea quadricolor, single H. crispa or M. doreensis, either one should be fine. I would really just experiment and see which suits your tastes as far as lighting is concerned. Then again, 50/50s for the extra PAR wouldn't hurt, either.

Yeah, I am realy wanting to go for a RBTA because of my lighting, not sure how well an H. Crispa would do.

I was thinking that too, about the PAR. I will probably go with the 50/50s.

Should be fine. I think H. crispa would do fine in your tank (if that is what you wanted to do) with that lighting--it's just that it will fill the entire tank when it grows. It does look good, however. Have you seen phender's 40 gallon with that one large H. crispa?

Sure, here you go (hope you don't mind, phender :) )

This one is about 18" across. I've had it for over 12 years.

All anemones shown are alive and well.

For this tank, I am wanting to do a single Anemone with zoathids and shrooms, and maybe a few LPS and Softies. Basically, this tank won't be ALL anemones, rather it will have a center focus on the anemone.
