So I have managed to get 3 skimmer choices from people. Im limited that it has to be a hang on version as no sump.

The options are

Deltec 600 mce

Reef octopus classic 1000

Bubble magus e5

They are all going to cost about the same amount, just wondering peoples opinions on which is the best.

I have read ppl rave about the deltec but is it that good?

Although not HOB skimmers, I have both a RO 150sss and a BM5 skimmer and like them both very much. Having no experience with the deltec I can't offer any help there. I would guess that their HOB versions are quite good too.

The biggest drawback to a HOB skimmer is the almost inevitable overflow that all skimmers have from time to time.

Octopus 1000

Octopus 1000

I have had an Octopus 1000 for 3 years. Works fairly well. I have a waste basket tucked under it because after power outages or re-starts it tends to overflow the drainage reservoir a bit before draining vortex kicks in. I attached a picture of about how much it collects before stalling due to the dirty column.

So choice is now between a brand new bubble magus e3 which is upto 300l tank.
Or a deltec mce 600 that's used but upto 600l tank.

Now my tank is 300l capacity so is it worth going higher capacity skimmer or will the 300l one work effectively enough?

Sorry for questions.

IMHO and IME, skimmers tend to be a bit overrated by their manufacturers. I keep my tanks fairly lightly stocked and aim for something that is rated for at least 1.5x tank size. It will also allow for some wiggle room if (when) you upgrade to a larger system.
