2xMP10 or 1 MP40

tank has been up and running for about 1 year now. About 6 months ago i decided to have a go with a jebao wave maker and it died two months ago.

so now I'm looking for advice on which would be better for my 75g. I'm open to any suggestions for either Ecotech or Tunze solutions. i would like the pumps to be wave types which is why I'm leaning towards Ecotech. i just don't know whats better. I'm worried the mp10's won't be strong enough. but also concerned that 1 mp 40 will leave dead spots and I'm certain i cannot convince the wife i need $800 to spend on 2 wp40's.

in the tank right now i have a duncan, hammer, torch, Xenia(hate it, wife loves it so it stays) and a plum crazy acro. all are doing pretty good but i would like this tank to be SPS dominate in the future.

PS atm i am getting by with 2 Koralia 1500's and my return. I hate the static flow and so do my LPS

2xmp10s would be fine for your 75g

two of them would be 3150gph, which would give you a turn over a 42x...thats not including your return pump....

thanks for the reply. One question about the wireless versions of these pumps. would they be able to talk to each other to sync up or would i also have to purchase the reef link?

they should sync up on their own with the settings...

2 mp10s would be plenty.

Take a look at the new maxspect gyre eg. here and demos on youtube. Similar price to a single MP10 and no dead spots for sure. I think this would be a good fit for your 75g.

2x MP10 or 1x MP40 would work too - there is a flow calculator on the ecotech marine website. You don't need a controller to use them but its much easier with one. Reeflink or Apex + WWM both work.

You can setup a master and slave from the controllers that comes with the vortech pumps, but the manual controls and menu system are quite awkward and confusing to use. Download the manuals and see what you think before buying.

The new maxspect looks quite compelling...

i remember watching the gyre from last years MACNA vids and thought it was really nice. Just wasnt sold on it. Am afraid its just the new gimmick lol. I got the Jebao and am now 6months later out $114.

I know maxpect makes great LED solutions, some of the best imo. But i feel in the field of wavemakers/powerheads they are new and have gone and made something amazing. not sure if i want to spend that cash on it then next year be back here again.

I do agree, they look amazing. Maxspect has a great track record with LED design and i am sure they took as much care with their PH design. Its still a new area for them

I am running two mp10 on my 90 gallon in sync on either end and added one more later on the back glass. Great flow and zero deadspots.

im not sold on the gyre either. i think they are better suited for larger tanks and better when having to gyres working instead of just one... you can get a gyre goin by using regular koralias or tunze. so to me they are just something "new" to buy... and i would avoid only one mp40 unless you see yourself upgrading to a larger tank within the next yr. if not upgrading then 2xmp10s are your best options of you dont wanna go with jebao again...

im definitely not getting a jebao again. im really leaning towards 2 mp10's and yes in the future, i want a 265 or 300+. Just bought a house and am remodeling the basement and working out where to put the tank and its dimensions. i already have my water making station and somewhat have my QT hospital tank area set up for it. Still working that all out but making due for now for the 75.

but after i get this 75 up and running for a year get my husbandry habbits down along with identifying issues and how to deal with them quickly, the wife said we can go big.

When turning the 75 from FW to SW she saw a 265 and said "OHH get that" I knew better after 18 yrs in FW and my research into SW over the past 10 that i need to start smaller. Learn the ins and outs and just get my ducks in a row, so to speak.

That being said when it comes time to upgrade to my larger tank, hopefully next year, i will either sell off my MP10's on ebay or use them im a 75 display refugium upstairs that supports the 300+. Im still working out all the plumbing thats needed. I have a crazy design thats links a 75 Xenia garden upstairs, the 300+ in the basement and a nutrient export tank in the gaming room adjacent to the DT. getting off topic lol.

so yea, prob getting the 10's as i feel the gyre, imo, is great, but not ideal for my needs in my 75. Not a fan of static flow, love the different types of flowes, ELSE, waves, ect that better mimic nature.

I run 2x MP40s on my 120g DT using an Apex controller. Adding a controller allowed me to do a lot more with the configuration. Agree 2 pumps more fun than 1...

I had the same feelings about the gyre when I first saw it, but the recent reviews in real tanks changed my mind. I will give one a go...

I think Laminar flow is more natural than the effects we can create with 2 powerheads whatever their configuration. Just my opinion and observations from scuba diving. The gyre can do alternating strength & frequency and reverse direction (albeit at much lower power).

I feel the powerhead/wavemaker market is quite sizable and profitable for some manufacturers. The marketing materials for some of them are very highly developed and in some ways overstate the reality of what the products can deliver. At the end of the day, we each have to decide what is useful and what is hype.

Sometimes its fun to have these toys to play with. It is a hobby after all. Maybe...
