I got a yellow and gold derasa with blue along the edge of the mantle from my LFS.

Ive never had a clam before, I am using DT phytofeast for food. I have it in a 12g nano, that is about 10 inches tall. I have a 98watt quad 50/50 PC on top and about 600gph running thru the tank.

How do I know the clam is happy and eating. I notice 2 holes on the clam a mouth shape and a blowhole type. Which one does it get food thru?

My LFS guy has a same clam in a 20g with power compacts and everything is okie dokie.

I like your clam, I have the same type.

Also, I hope you are aware that a 12g nano isnt going to be enough for that baby pretty soon if you are caring for it correctly. Those suckers get BIG. Good luck with it..

thank you very much

Yeah I know they can get HUGE!!!!!!. I am hopefully upgrading from my 50 I have to something above 125g with Halides. Then It will get a new home.

oh and by the way i love my mac more than my tank and its the only thing i own that gets more of my time
power to the mac user

LOL You RULE!!!! nice clam also. The store i got my derasa from has one in a 20g tank with about 120watts of power compacts.

The owner has never steered me wrong, he knows his stuff.

you just replace your powerquad every 5 months and it will be enough light also they eat allot of calcium so keep up on water changes if you dont do any real measuring

I am using DT phytofeast for food.

No such product Edwin :)

Reef Nutrition is the maker of Phyto-Feast. DT's is a competing brand ;)

LOL gresh you got me.....

wow that was retarded

Im using Reed's phtyofeast, Which I love Gresham.

I tried DT's to compare & reeds is alot thicker and a bigger bottle.

yeah I like reff nutrition better than DT's seems more concentrated and I hate expiration dates.
Ditto on the calcium keep it up clams will use it up.

Without expiration dates, how do you know when the "live" product is dead, or starting to lose nutritional value?

I read a good article in a zoology journal that discussed feeding trials of clams using the various phytoplankton's on the market these days.
Here is an abstract from that article

Hobbyist and researchers often use commercially available phytoplankton concentrates to maintain filter feeding organisms held in their ornamental or experimental tanks. This study investigated the nutritional value of 10 products available commercially for juvenile hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria. Growth and mortality rates in clams fed these products were compared with those found in clams fed fresh cultures of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana, which is considered an industry standard for supporting growth of juvenile bivalves. Our results show a clear difference in feed nutritional value between non-living and living commercial diets, and among commercial diets advertised as containing live algae. Overall, results showed that juvenile hard clams fed fresh cultures of I. galbana displayed the best growth and lowest mortality rates, followed by those fed the commercial diet DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton. Growth and mortality rates in unfed controls were similar to those found in clams fed commercial non-living algae mixes or diets advertised as containing live algae (Phyto-Feast Live product). Results also showed that the nutritional value of fresh algae (I. galbana) cultures is lost rapidly when cultures are maintained at 4°C, suggesting that algae present in some commercial diets may lose their nutritional value during processing or refrigerated storage. The commercial blend, DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton, seems to represent a good substitute to lab grown algae for clams held in ornamental or experimental aquariums. Thanks for that info Rod
will clams eat dt oyster eggs
Your food rocks i just got some and my fish are loving it

They may eat the eggs, but I dont know for sure. It seems like I remember that Dr Rob Toonen did some work with clams ingesting glass beads. The studies that He (Dr Toonen) did was to show that just because a clam may eat something that it doesnt necessarily mean that it is receiving any nutritional value from what they eat.

What surprised me most in the article that I read was the mortality rates, when the clams were fed some of these phytoplankton's. One in particular.

The study was probably flawed and one sided.

DT's has the phyto which is live. But did they say they used Reed's Like phyto or the other phyto. The way I read it. It sounded like they used Live DT's and regular phyto from Reed, not there Live phytofeast.

Of course live is better then dead.

I say someone got a Payoff!
