30 gallon nano build...from scratch!

Sorry for the delay in updates.
Some have asked for pics of my 12 gallon long that this new 30 gallon will replace. Its 36"x8"x9". Great little tank. Love the dimensions. Pics were taken early morning so corals aren't looking their best just yet.

Here is some shots of the finished stand with tank in place. Still need to cover the top of the stand, but that's a surprise. ;) I was going for a simple, lodge feel to match the rest of the house, yet also a bit contemporary in style this time around. Doors were cut out from the existing panels I fabricated and secured. I used hidden hinges to put them back in place to continue the low profile. I didn't want any hardware showing, so I used hidden hinges and push magnet attachments on the inside so all I need to do is push the door in and it pops out to open. The walnut is just beautiful wood and took the stain very well.
Still lots of work to do on the tank. Hope to get holes drilled for my external overflow box today so I can get that mounted and the plumbing done this weekend.

Great job! I really do like the stand! Interested to see how you do the overflow and sump underneath. Im sure it will look awesome judging by your attention to detail!

Ever have any algae issue with the larger tank sitting my the window?
I've never had a large tank sitting next to a window before so I can't offer any input there.
The windows are North facing windows with a pretty decent overhang from the home's prow, so not much direct light hits the tank.
I have not noticed any increase in algae on the 12 gallon compared to my other tanks before this.

Really cool placement in the room. Stand looks awesome. I absolutely love square shallow tanks like this.
Thank you. It will be nice to enjoy this tank upstairs in the main living area instead of having to go downstairs to the rec room like before. Plus I can now enjoy the tank during all those annoying commercials!

Thank you. I hope to get a good start on the overflow and sump plumbing this weekend. Nothing really fancy, just a 20 gallon long with a few baffles, a skimmer (still undecided), and a Mag 5 return pump. I'll also have a 10 gallon RO top off resevoir with the Tunze osmolater. System will be run/monitored by a ReefKeeper Lite.

Could use some advice on skimmers.
Buy a used Tunze Reefpack 500 system, which includes the 9010 skimmer with extra drainable collection cup and the 3166 filter with controllable pump and magnet mounts...
OR
a brand new Reef Octopus 100 skimmer?
The Tunze reefpack is $255.
The Reef Octopus is $170.
Both are just about right for my sump application.
Advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I am running a PM Redline on my display of the same size. No complaints. LOL I have the PM 100RL on my 65gal and the PM 150RL on my 30gal... what was I thinking?

Good skimmers

Since I have tried pretty much every skimmer going and hence they call me the Skimmer King on my other board

SWC 160 cone with the Atman pump super quiet, pump under the skimmer bubble plate and well made going for 250 is the price tag

i used one on my 150 and it was super

I was able to put together the overflow box last night and secured it to the tank this morning. Local glass shop drilled the holes for me ($10 per hole, very fair price and quality work, absolute NO chipping at all!!!).
I'll give it a few days to cure and start working on the sump design and plumbing.
Here are some pics:
Basic overflow 6" long by 5" tall by 2 1/2" wide; 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" holes:

Well done. This is going to be an excellent tank. Very cleanly made. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I also like your bonsai in the background. That is also another hobby of mine. Is that a Chinese Elm?

A bit of progress. Overflow box installed, bulkheads installed, Stockman standpipe fabricated and return plumbing put in place. I'm going to build a cover box out of blue pearlescent stained glass to hide the plumbing from all sides. I just sit a piece in place to get an idea of the look.
Will work on the sump baffles later this afternoon.
Oh, also made cut out for ReefKeeper Lite flush mount install on the side of the stand.

very good looking so far. The center overflow idea would have been great in this application. But i think this will look just as good when done.

Thank you!
I considered a central overflow, but the most important thing with this tank's design was striving for completely unobstructed viewing and a plumbing free look throughout the tank with a completely open water column from left to right and top to bottom.
I think I've achieved this with this back corner external overflow. From the two prime viewing angles, their will be nothing to distract the viewer from the corals and fish inside the tank, with the exception of a single Vortech MP 10ES on one side, there will nothing to obscure or detach from the livestock.

First water test through the overflow and return. I can't tell you how nervous I am with all this water on my main living area since I build all this myself! Maybe a bit too trusting in my skills. I really should have tested this system down in the garage to ease my mind, but so far so good. Fingers crossed! I'll let it run for a few hours and then drain it and prep for salt!
