300 gallon lookdown

I am just starting this project I plan on using a 300 gallon stock tank and a 75 gallon stock tank for the sump..

ok I have a 120 gal. and a 150 gal. tanks that I will be taking down and putting all my liverock and livestock corals/fish into the 300 stock tank.. so this has to be down most likely in one day.....or I can do just the 120 and the 150 at a later date...

I am looking for advice ....can I or should I use the sand from the existing tanks?

what size should I use for a drain to the sump? I was thinking of using a 2" bulkhead..

I will keep every posted with progress reports and pictures in the coming days

the reason for this up grade is I have some fish and corals that are outgrowing there homes and I am on a budget right now...

I want to sell all my equipment after I take the tanks down and get a bubble king skimmer can some on recommend an appropriate size model?

I wouldnt reuse all of your sand from the old tanks. They say sand beds need to be eventually replaced, and what better time than now? Id get all new sand, and use some of your old sand to seed it.

A 2" should be fine I Would think. On my 190g, I have a 1.5" I believe, and its nowhere near the capacity it can handle. I forget how many GPH water falls at, but its around 750-1000gph IIRC. So as long as you dont have 1500-2000 gph running through your sump (which I dont think you should lol), you'd be fine I would imagine.

ok bought my tanks found a really good deal on them ..picked up a 300 gal. and 100gal. and also got a 150 gal for a qt/hospital tank just in case I have a couple big fish so I figure bigger tank less stress...

Check out the "chicago forum."

well I am looking for some input as I want to get this project done right the first time....

I am planning on using three 1 1/2 bulkheads very close to the top drains the 300 gallon dimensions are 48 wide x 26 high x 82 long and the sump is 100 gallon.. does this sound ok?

I am have not decided what to do for a return pump and plumbing I have 2 pumps from my other tanks but I think they are two small the are gen-x pcx-40 so I was thing a reflo barracuda... thoughts?

and does anyone have any advice for ideas for return plumbing I was thing just bulkheads with locline but I'm not sure...

thanks for any helpful info or any past threads that might give some ideas

Looking forward to seeing this. Its similar to the one I'm setting up, only yours is bigger. Mine's a 150 with a 100g sump.

wow awesome idea! i did a quick search of those tubs (i must have missed it on the page) and where do you think would be the best place to find them? Who makes them? I think when it comes time for me to move, i would do something like you have here to take the stress off moving and allow me to spend the time to set up my tank again. :)

I've always loved lookdown tanks! Yours looks like it's going to be cool.

I'm using the round version of the 300 gallon as a lookdown. It's fed via the tank overflows into a 100 gallon fuge and then into the 300.

Just finished wiring for the room last week. Should have pics of the setup in a few weeks.

I was inspired by a local club member who had 2 600 gallon lookdown tanks in his garage.

Again, looking sweet!

Rubbermaid makes them. Best place to find them is feed stores, farm supply stores, they're made for horses or other agricultural uses and are VERY tough.

with your display tub surface drains, you could connect them with a horizontal pvc pipe. If you cut a slit down the horizontal pipe you would have an excellent surface skimmer.
