300 Gallon Tanks...How many fish you have?

I am going back and forth between whether I should build a 325 gallon or a 400. I think the 325 sized dimensions will look better but the 400 would allow more fish...and i love fish in a tank.

It will be primarily sps with an "open" rockwork look to it.

How many fish do you guys have in your 300-350 gallon tanks?

Thanks

30-40.. I dont see them all at once, so I dont really know..

The biggest is my 12" sohal...
Smallest is a 1/2" 6 line wrasse.

Remember the more fish you have the more poop they make...more water changes are required to keep the tank in check.

Unbelievably....I have 17 fish in my 400 gallon. It does not seem to me that I have room to be adding additional fish.

Achilles Tang
Yellow Tang
White Cheek Tang
Atlantic Blue Tang
Blonde Naso (N. elegans)
Naso vlamingi
Naso unicornis
Xmas wrasse
Lookdown
Pair of Maroon Clowns
Pair of Orange spotted sleeper gobies
Female Blue Throat Trigger
Rabbitfish
Majestic Angel
Bicolour Angel

I'm sure I'm forgetting one....hmm...

Also mine is going to be primarily SPS and LPS with alittle softies in the mix. I have very open rock work also.

Thanks Erik

Okay...thanks. Jason that fish list is very similar to what I am thinking, so looks like I will have to go with the bigger tank.

Those of you with Sohal Tangs, are there any special tricks to get them into the tank and keep everyone happy without the Sohal beating up on the other Tangs?

What I have done is either:
A) Add the sohal last
B) Adding quite a few fish at once so the sohal doesn't just pick on one fish.
-- After a week or so my sohal backs off the new fish. I just have to be sure to feed heavily in that time to make sure the new fish can eat.

Thanks Erik

Hey Matt!!

I have the following fish on my 300 gallon

1 xlg purple tang

lubbocks wrasse
exquisite wrasse
2 true perc clownfish
blue spot jawfish
diamond goby
yashia shrimp goby w/pistol shrimp
mandarin goby

I have a standard 300 and it has:

2 GSM Clowns (one is 5 inches the other is 3 inches)
2 Blennies (both about 4 inches)
1 Bar Goby (4 inches)
1 Royal Gramma( 3 inches)
6 Yellow Tangs (ranging from 3 to 6 inches)
4 Hippo Tangs (ranging from 3 to 7 inches)
2 Scopas Tangs (both about 4 inches)
2 Purple Tangs (about 3.5 inches)
1 Sailfin Tang (5 inches)
1 Kole Tang (5 inches)
1 Vlamingii Tang (about 8 or 9 inches)
1 Foxface (7+ inches)
and 2 random damsels I didn't have the heart to toss out.

That's 26 and I still want more tangs, I just don't think it's a good idea to have so many (even as many as I have) if you want an SPS dominant tank. Then again, you could just get a bigger skimmer!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Not quite 300, but I have almost 40 fish in my 265 mixed reef. Not overloaded with rock, though SPS growth is intruding on swimming space. Six tangs (Achilles, Naso, Yellow, Purple, Sailfin, Hippo), seven anthias, four pyramid butterflyfish, couple of dwarf angels, obligatory clown pair, plus another 20 or so smaller fish.

If you are going to keep SPS with a lot of fish make sure you have adequate export mechanisms to counter feeding.

Wow. That's a lot.

I have the following in my 360, although I'm not done stocking:

Tennenti Tang
Mimic Tang
Convict Tang
Kole Tang
Banggai Cardinal Pair
Yellow Wrasse
1 green chromis
12 assorted Chrysiptera damsels

I'd like to add one more tang potentially, more damsels, and at some point a cloud of anthias. If I ever get the guts I'll add a few dwarf angels - just worried about all of the zoas becoming a snack.
