would like to find a low level light that could be used over the cave area to give the illusion of sunlight streaming through holes in top of the cave. . not continous..maybe just set it up on a timer of sorts.

LEDs with narrow optics on them! You coud rig them to actually shine through pieces of rockwork to give a jagged edge to the shadow, and the light coming from them would be laminar enough to create the "shaft of light" look. And they're easy to dim. Or even put it on a tiny light rail and have it move through the day to give the illusion of the sun moving through the sky.

Do you have a list of the species of algae in the tank? I'd love to have macro on display but it seems hard to strike a balance between species that are able to survive but not overtake the tank (and aren't eaten by the livestock...)

Gary.. actually I have 2 pieces of Litophyllon , the other is on the opposite end of the tank laying on the sand. The litoP on the sand is a different shape than the one growing on the rock, the sand one is more round and has more pronounced dome than the rock covered piece.

Der Wille, I will send you a list of the macros in the tank..

I like the LEDS on a light rail giving the illusion of sun movement.Where would I get such an animal?

If you're talking about buying one off the shelf, I'm not the right person to ask. This sort of thing is on my DIY shortlist so hopefully I'll have a finished project in 6 or 8 months if you wanna just wait and copy mine.

I'm basically planning to get a really low RPM hobby gearmotor like this:

http://www.mpja.com/1-RPM-120VAC-TIMER-MOTOR/productinfo/17843+MA/

and a small LED array along the lines of this:

http://www.rapidled.com/4-led-moonlight-kit/

Rig a bracket so the motor can rotate the heatsink and/or slide it along a rail and you're all set.
