I have a completely empty living room at the moment and have been researching about the possibility of keeping a shark and/or ray. I am wanting something at least 300 gallons, but at the same time Im tihnking it will have to be larger. The wall it can go against is 18 feet long, and width really doesnt matter, but anything more than 3 or 4 feet might look a little goofy. The shark I am interested is the epaullete shark, and the stingray is a the blue dot. The first thing I need to determine is what the minimum width and length, and try to find a balance that would allow for the inhabitants best comfort.

thanks for your thoughts

right now pretty open, i have a lot of cash set aside at the moment, but theres no hurt in having to wait another month, just to get everything perfect

with that being said there is also going to be the complication of not having a basement, i have decided either making a custom sump and employing the use of multiple skimmers or doing like I have with my 75 gallon reef and made a side cabinet which houses the water top off, refugium, phosphate and carbon media filters.

ill try to find it the search isnt working, but do you have any suggestions on a good width with those two being the main inhabitants, also would power compacts or t5s be sufficient as far as lighting goes (there will be no coral just sand live rock and fish)

i really like your tank design, i need to try and find somewhere down in south texas that can do custom acrylic sumps

Where in South Texas are you? If you in/around Austin, check out Kingfish aquariums. They are in the process of setting up a shop in town now, and they do acrylic sumps. Give them a call: (512) 371-3366.

Their website is: http://www.kingfishaquarium.com/ .

thanks that exactly what i was needing, I live in san marcos so a trip to austin is nothing im usually up at aquatech at least once a month anyway

is there anyone that I should look at as far as the aqaurium build, I kinda dont want glass, but at the same time im afraid of ann acrylic tank scratching real easy

I don't know if I want glass because im afraid of the epaullete shark or stingray knocking down the rock and breaking it, but at the same time if it is cheaper, I would prefer it. I just really need to be pointed in the right direction as far as custom glass or acrylic builders might be.

get base rock and use rods and dril it so it cant be knocked over. if you can i would 96x36x24 just more room for the shark. also if you glass check out aquarium obessed at
aquariumobessed.com

ive never used just base rock, or seen it for sale. Without live rock will i just have to make up for by overskimming? Im shooting also for a 48" width, and I can go as far as 18'. Also I've heard of attaching rock with cable...Really don't want to do this but when you say drilling do you mean through the glass? Would it be better also do add the rock before adding the sand, just to prevent a collapse from digging? Im worried about the added pressure on the glass.
