30x30x12 dimension help

I was going to do a 24x24x20 tank but I have all pieces of glass to do a 30x30x12 tank, I see that elos uses 1/4 inch glass on their mini tank and I was just wondering if that would be fine to use on the dimensions that I want to use.

I would be using the floating pane like giga in his tanks use so I would only have to buy the 2 bottom pieces.

Thanks guys

Tempered or not?

I was looking at the same tank from a local builder here and he was using 3/8" glass. He over does most of the things he builds, but probably rightfully so.

If your tank is 30 long 30 wide by 12 high, with a small eurobrace or just to straps across the top I think 1/4 would be fine. Without any braces I would be worried about it. It would hold water, but it would bow quite a bit.

Pressure on the sides of the glass has nothing to do with the width of the tank, only the depth. 12" isn't too high so you might be able to do something with that, but I'd try and get more opinions.

Alex,

Your are correct in in that the pressure has nothing to with the width, but the total force does. If there is say 1 psi of pressure on the tank, and you double the length of the side, you will have twice the total force trying to bow out the side. That is why tanks with longer sides either have more braces or thicker material even if they are not any taller.
