3162 comline filter heater size...

Hi! I recently received the comline set 3162 filter and 9004 Skimmer. The filter is said to "accept" a heater up to 75W and shows the Eheim heater in all the drawings and pictures I have seen. Thus... I ordered the 75@ Eheim Jaeger heater. But... it sticks out about 3 inches out of the filter! The minimum water line for the heater is about 1" above the top of the filter which basically forces the filter to be completely submerged, 1" below water line at least. This seems contrary to the intake teeth at the top of the filter seemingly designed to intake surface water... Any ideas on this? I have not opened the filter yet to see what's in the way, but it feels pretty sturdy like part of the filter body. Would I have to make some alterations/cut outs to allow the heater to recess deeper into the filter body? Is there maybe a break out tab of some kind inside?

Thx!

The biggest Eheim/Jager heater that will fit is 50W. In other brands which are shorter up to 75W can work and I have heard of people using up to 100W without issues. The 75W Eheim heater does not work as the temperature sensor will be above the water and the heater will not cycle.

Roger,

Thanks for the info... hmmm... well... in that case I would strongly recommend either not saying anything about the wattage in the documentation/literature on-line or provide specific wattages for specific brands/models. Not necessarily all brands but if you have pictures out there w/the Jaeger and the documentation drawings clearly show silhouette of a Jaeger right next to where it says 75W ... it is highly misleading to say the least. In my case its actually going to cost me, and dare I say I am not the dumbest person I have met ;)

My apologies but the stated wattage is based only on calculations of how hot the heater will get on the surface and much beyond that the plastic would be damaged, we did not intend to imply that a 75W Eheim heater will fit, we used an Eheim/Jager heater of 50W in the photo as it is the most common brand of heater in Europe and is what we had available to demonstrate the heater option.

Roger,

So what other brand(s) heater would fit in that opening that would be 75 or 100 W? I've looked around and so far the only heaters which are sub 10" and 75W are the wrong shape (e.g. the flat Cobalt Neo Therm heaters).

What about a cobalt neotherm they are very small
Thanks for the suggestion, but they won't fit. They are short and flat. Length wise they would be great, but they are way too wide - 2 1/4" wide to be precise. Heater sleeve opening in 3162 is round and ~7/8" in diameter.

Perhaps someone else can chime in, I know the old Aquarium Systems heaters VisiTherm were a good fit but all I have ever used myself is the 50W Jager.

Roger,

Understood... I would love to use the Jaeger, the problem is 50W heater is rated up to 16 Gal... which is a bit low relative to what the filter is rated at. I was hoping to use the 3162 & the skimmer in a 30'ish Gal tank, hence my predicament.

Unless someone tells me that Jaeger heaters are underrated and the 50 can handle a 30 Gal tank?

What was the largest tank you yoused the 50W Jaeger in? ;)

Thanks,

Spacey :)
