35g lights? filtration?

i just set up my first tank about 4 weeks ago so im really new to everything and have a million questions... i bought my 35g glass aquarium, lights, hang on the back filter, and few other things from a guy that i know pretty good. Everything was used he said he had just upgraded to a 120g and i just bought all his old stuff. that was about 4 weeks ago my tank is cycling now with sand, water, and about 25lbs of rock. the lighting that i got from him he said was pc lights, he said i can keep most coral under, now i have been reading some threads and asking some questions and most people are saying different that pc isnt that great and prob can only keep softies.... is this true? i had a basic hang on the back filter until yesterday for money reason and i bought a remora protein skimmer from him. he said that is the same thing he used on the tank, he showed me how to work it and i have it working and it seems to be doing fine its filling up with "nog". but there is a thread that is debating on remora and almost everyone said they are crap. is this true? did i just waste 125.00? i have a pic of my lights in my gallery if someone could id. all i know is they actinic and he called them pc maybe its the same. thanks for any help.
