would like to buy 1 or 2 powerheads for a tank thats a minimalistic mixed reef with a ~500gph return.

2 pumps is always better because being able to change the flow direction is useful for keeping corals from all leaning one way and for keeping detritus stirred up. I would consider 2 6055 the "Cadillac" system and 2 6045 a more basic system. The 6055 are electronic and you can set the flow and alternate pumps. The 6045 have a basic mechanical flow adjustment and you could alternate them with a simple timer but they must run at least 15 minutes between off and on intervals and they will click on start up.
