39g and 29g double stack

Well, I am in the need of a QT/grow out tank, and my wife would like to move the anemones out of the bedroom â€"œ here is what I have come up with for a solution!

<a href="http://s155.photobucket.com/albums/s289/ben-stang/double%20stack%2029g%2039g/?action=view&current=double2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s289/ben-stang/double%20stack%2029g%2039g/double2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s155.photobucket.com/albums/s289/ben-stang/double%20stack%2029g%2039g/?action=view&current=double.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s289/ben-stang/double%20stack%2029g%2039g/double.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The top tank (39g) will be the new home for the RBTA (rose bubble tip anemone) and PLTA (purple long tenicle anemone), and hopefully the new happy couple â€"œ GSM (gold stripe maroon) clowns. I am trying to add a new male!

The bottom tank (29g â€"œ thanks Joe!) will be the sump / frag rack. Mostly for SPS backups and sellable stuff!

Drain -The over flow drain from 39g will go down and t into the refugium (aqua clear 110 modified) and a skimmer. Then they will both dump into the 29g.

Return - a Rio 3100 will do the work, I will add a “T” right after the pump. This will allow me to have a branch into the 29g, and the return to the top. The flow to the top will be limited to low. The “T” into the 29g will take the remaining flow.

Refugium â€"œ A modified Aquaclear 110 will be used for the system. I know it should be bigger, but anything will help! It still works like a filter with a pickup and dumps out. I will direct feed it from the drain â€"œ one less pump!

Skimmer - most likely hang-on (anyone have one cheap â€"œ no pump needed!) I found a small sea-life skimmer that might work out, but will take up room from the rack!

Seperating tanks â€"œ If I have to treat the SPS tank, I will be able to be move the refugium up to the 39g, and shut off the return pump. Then i will add a PH to the 39g to get more flow (the aquaclear still works like a filter).

Lighting â€"œ
29g - sump/frag will have a 175w DE MH and will keep my eye out for a pair of 24” PC’s
39g â€"œ will have 3 or 4 24” VHO’s and cheap fluorescent bulbs

plumbing â€"œ will “T” off the return pump, side branch into the 29g with a spray bar, through will go up to 39g to a spray bar. I will have a valve on both sides of the “T” to control flow to the top tank. The drain will come from the overflow to another “T” that will split into the refugium and skimmer, also with valves to each. Both then dumping into the 29g sump.

more info -
39g - anemone tank will have the sand and live rock, along with the clowns and anemones, this will be the main display.

29g â€"œ will have the return pump, heater, modded MJ600 powerhead, hang-on skimmer (anyone have one for sale cheap!?), refugium and frag rack - which will be as big as possible and still get everything in there! I will have doors protecting this tank from the little ones, since it is so close to the ground! Might put a plexiglass window in each door to see the frags growing! No sand, No liverock, will add a few small fish like a wrasse and maybe couple damsels/chromis â€"œ not sure.

Got a little start this weekend. I took apart the eclipse stand, cut new sides out of oak ply, made it 6” taller so I can get into the sump. I still have to add veneer trim to the edges of the ply and stain it. But only have a few minutes here and there to work on it!

Looks good so far! The only thing I see, is how is the drain feeding a HOB skimmer? You'd need some type of HOB recirc. skimmer then?

That and the other thing would be you have to put a ton of trust into that u-tube overflow! If it were to stop for any reason, the Rio 3100 would pump all 29gals up there.

Shawn - great point on the flow stopping in the u-tube. even though i used to run one for years, i also had a return area in the sump, so it would only have been a few gallons. I do have a float switch in the closet, so i will connect it to the pump!

as far as the recirc skimmer, i was just assuming since most skimmers use a pump to introduce the water, i would just be able to allow gravity to introduce the water. Mainly i am looking to run as few pumps as i need to!

Id use two overflows.

Jay - do you mean 2 tubes in the same overflow, or 2 overflows? How's your frag tank BTW?

Running right now but a bit cloudy. I mean two seperate overflows. But if you have a section baffled off where it can't overflow, then you could safely use one.

I'm gonna try to get the rock in there today and then get my pictures uploaded.

2 overflows definately wouldn't hurt. I will keep an eye out for a cheap used one. But for now, i will put the float switch in.

i'll keep an eye out for your updates.

on the note of u-tubes i also have not had one overflow but never say never. george has that problem and a good fix would be to drill a hole ontop of the u-tube and insery one of those airline tubing adapters and hook up an aqua lifter pump to it. seems to help george.

ok, quick update, i got a bit done this weekend, and water starting to go in!

I painted all the plumbing black, except the handles, the internal part of the over flow is now painted. I ran regular water through it for a few hours to make sure all was working, then drained it.

I got 5g from the anemone tank and added it along with a new bag of rinsed quickcrete sand and a 5g bucket of fresh salt water, along with a couple new base rocks. I put a powerheadin there from the anemone tank and it had a few stalks of xenia on it, so we will see if they make it!

just for reference, the tank is 24" long.

here is the tanks owners waiting for their house to get finished!
the PLTA is in the left corner behind the coraline - i know, but the only free time i get, is when our daughter is sleeping in the room!
