4 line wrasse day 5 still alive

i have a 4 line wrasse that i thought was suffering from ammonia poisoning but i got him into my established qt tank and was hoping he would recover.( i had lost a few fish in that setup so assuming it was poisoning) when i put him into the qt he was lively and active picking off the rocks, then he turned for the worse. he has now been laying on his side gasping for air, thinking its just going to be a matter of hours! well its day 5 now and he's still fighting! now in a 10g by himself. laying on his side gasping, then has moments of life. this morning i see slime all over and what appears to be his cacoon. he hasn't eaten in over 5 days. no markings on him, like ich or anything like that, body seems in good shape, eyes are clear.
debating on a freshwater dip.

Where was he in the first place to receive ammonia burns? Were/are his gills red? How long have you had him? Is he new? If so he could be dealing with what sounds like brook. A FW dip will give him some relief if he is dealing with brook, velvet or flukes.

I did a fish order 2 weeks ago. 4 fish were put into a 50g qt. Including him. Did a small water change after a couple days, but I left the 2nd change go past 4 days! I never did confirm if it was ammonia, I did assume as they were eating well I am very dillegent on my water changes for a qt. Gills do not seem any more red then usually, but he does have red on his face so a little difficult to tell.
I did order 6 fish in that order. 2 fish went into the more established qt, as its only a 30g, and those 2 fish are doing good. The wrasse is the only one still hanging on from the 4 in that 50g

And all the other fish that were in the 50 are dead, right? Can you post a pic of the wrasse? Do you have any Prime or something to lock the ammonia?

Ya all other fish that were in the 50 are dead.
I can put on a pic but it will be so blurry you won't see anything!
He is now in a 10g quarantine by himself, with daily water changes from my display tank, so ammonia (shouldn't) be an issue anymore
His coloration is good, no abrasions, no spots. No fading color.
I gave him a 10min freshwater dip this morning. And my girlfriend tried feeding him a mysis soaked in selcon and garlic pushing it into its mouth. Says he ate it! I just smiled and said OK! Didn't want to hurt her feelings. Lol

If you have any Ova Numar, it is great food for wrasses in that condition. Feed a tiny bit of a time near his mouth. Good luck.

How did he fair during the dip? Did anything come off of him and is he breathing better after it? You didn't have to go 10 minutes, 5 would have been more than sufficient.
How are you aerating the water in the 10 gallon? Is he still laying on the bottom still gasping?
Ova are eggs/caviar from various sources, lobster, prawns, etc and it's like crack for fish

Well after the 6th day he has final passed! I did not see anything come off during the dip, he definetly seemed a little more lively after the dip. 6 days of laying on his side, a real fighter! I examined him and his color were perfect gills didn't look all red of puffy! Guess I'll never know what it truly was. Thanks all for the input!

Man, sorry about that. Given that he perked up after the dip he more than likely had a parasitic disease such as brook or velvet. I would sterilize all equipment with which he had contact.
