Good luck, I'm not brave enough to spend my money on baby clams.

Hopefully they do well for you! They look good.

Lots of DT's Phyto, and cyclops. until they are 3" then they start getting their food from light. I believe that is what I read.

Baby clams 3 inches and under will NOT survive unless fed. You need to feed them. They'll eat DT's Oysters eggs, Phytoplankton or Cyclopsees. After they are about 4 inches they will be able to supply themselves with enough food from MH or T 5's lights. Even then though they need direct light do not shadow them until they are over 6 inches. Nemo's carries the 2 DT products. I suggest getting soe of it. They need to be feed daily when so small. Clams only eat during Daylight hours (when your lights are on).

i use both premium blend dt's plankton and oyster eggs from nemos, so hopefully all goes well couldn't resist buying good price and i like clams.

If you got that then you'll do just fine Darrick:) I'm like you, I love the clams more than anything in this hobby. Congrats on the new lill' ones :D

never knew this till i did some reading not long ago but you have to have some low level of nitrates for clams if not you have to raise nitrate up some for them to filter feed. And that clams are important to a reef system some people claim that adding clams to there tank actually helped straighten there system out as far as cleaning water.

i was actually never able to get my nitrates below 25 until i started adding clams, ive never had detectable nitrates since then. i guess they do bring the levels down and keep them down.

btw, i went up to nemos today and bought one of the maximas because i liked the ones you got so much---thanks for the tip

nemos has 3 of the blue maximas and 2 or 3 of the green/grey striped crocea. they were all 29.99 a piece i'm assuming the blue are maxima not sure he said when he ordered them he ordered six maximas and six crocea.

my older clams i got from nemos also about six months ago still doing great and have actually got more of there color back since i bought them. Most of coral i got from nemos died but fish and clams have done good.

First off I don't want to hurt you feelings, it's your money, but IMO I think you paid way to much for 1" maximas and croceas. $10-$15 is more reasonable.

I would suggest that you place them on the sand for now in pvc rings so that they do not attach to your live rock although it appears from your pics this may be too late. This way you can actually remove them from the tank each day and feed them in a smaller container. At this life stage these clams require large amounts of phytoplankton and other smal food stuffs in order to survive and grow. Its very difficult to achieve the needed concentration by just dosing the whole tank. For this reason, I would never suggest buying a clam under 3".

Nice looking clams though. I wish you luck.

the small ones are about 1 inch to 1.5 and were 29 bucks, online i found others that were 2 inches for at the least of 38 bucks but than you have to figure in shipping so smart guy it was cheaper to do it this way and support local pet store and buy from them.
Sorry spending my own money bothers you but its my money and its a hobby we all enjoy if you know were clams are only 10 or 15 bucks share your info with everyone as in were to get them. I know placing them on rocks they will attach but i have moved them were i wanted them on smaller rocks so i can still move them if needed to, i just snapped that pic with them all together for a a quick pic to post.

Darrick,

Sorry, I did not mean to offend. You are completely right. It's your money and its up to you to decide what your willing to pay for something. God knows I've over paid for many things in this hobby, sometimes willingly and sometimes not.

That said, I've seen 1" clams at Marine solutions for $15 before and even less at couple other LFS up north near Chigago. I've also bought 3-4" maximas and croceas at Gateway for the same price you paid for your 1-1.5". But again, in the end, its up to you to decide how much a clam is worth.

IMO, it's simply not worth saving a few bucks to take a chance on baby clams. The extra work involved in feeding, the fact that you really don't know what colors they'll develop, and their overall poor success record in the hobby have kept me away from buying any.

I wish you and your clams the best of luck. Many hobbyists have been successful raising baby clams but they're a minority.

the 1 inch maximas were like 40 or 50 bucks last week at marine solutions. and if you figure in the cost of gas and wear and tear on a vehicle to drive from st louis to chicago, a 30 dollar clam here is a greater bargain than a 15 dollar one in chicago

The Price of maximas has went way up the best prices i have found are 20-25 bucks and that was buying 10 -20 of them at a time... if you have found a place for 10 -15 please clue me into it.

Your both correct I actually just got back from MS this afternoon after dropping my brother off at the airport. I don't get out there that often and it was probably closer to a year ago when I saw those clams for $15. The price sure has sky rocketed lately. I think the 1-2 inch maximas were like 30-40 and the croceas a little cheaper.

I appolgize for my "Tridacnid inflation ignorance."

i was going off prices from other online vendors like liveaquaria.com which has combination sets like a crocea, maxim, squamosa or three other kinds. But clamsdirect.com has very good prices and you get to buy the clam you see in picture and they have good prices, its just shipping sometimes cost a bit but thats were this awesome club called slash comes in called a group order so everyone saves money on shipping plus most place give free shipping on large orders. I know not everyone needs a couple of clams but they do awesome job on straightening out nitrates in tank for those who can't keep nitrates down cause clams filter feed on nitrates also. Clams are important to reef systems as a natural filtration and helps keep water more stable, i've read in other forums were other reefers had more success with water parameters being stable and nitrates staying down by keeping clams.

Ok well, while I've always siad NOT to buy a baby clam under 3" I did. I agree with reeferhead, most in this hobby don't make it with the averidge hobbiest. But seeing that 2 people have bought them from Nemo's I deciede that I would make this a test.

Ok we have d.french with 4 of them. jwalters103 with 1 of them. And myself with 1 of them. Lets all three do our best at taking care of these little guys. If one of us loses our clam/clams please post here. Then we can review what we did and see if we can come up with a reason. At least were giving them a chance.
