40 Breeder? Actually 46 gallons? I'm confused...

Why are so many tanks labeled as one thing but really something else? Seem confusing to me.

For example the 40-breeder actually comes out to a little over 46 gallons?

It seems like aquariums are the only thing that is undersized in the aquarium hobby.

Why is that?

Would love some good conversation!

Thanks,

Charley

I've noticed the actual volume differences too. I think perhaps that's an attempt to take confusing odd numbers out of the equation. You know, 30 gallons is easier to remember than 37.5 gallons, or 10 gallons than 12 gallons. Maybe? Another idea is that they're accounting for displacement of water from substrate and rockwork. Just a hypothesis. I'm interested to know why too!:spin3:

are you using inside dimensions? also you're not going to till the tank to the very top, there will be at least an inch or two there as well.

inside dimensions using 1/4" glass... 35.5"x17.5"x16= 44 gallons. I filled up a brute 32 and filled up a breeder then I needed 2-5gallon buckets to top off plus a little less then 2 gallons= 44 gallons. tank was empty.
