40 breeder eshopps eclipse ghost style overflow help needed

Does this look like the water level will be low because of how long the teeth are ? It's 1/16" off the black plastic rim... So it's as high as it goes. The return bulkhead is also the same way the flange nut on the back is right on the trim. Wondering if I'm gonna have problems what do you guys think.

I bought this hoping it would be quieter than a glue on acrylic overflow box and I'm now nervous that I just wasted a 40$ tank because the water level will be low

Any imput appreciated

I got the same exact one but haven't got the tank together yet. Let us know how it turns out.

Those teeth are cut pretty deep, but they are also pretty narrow so with enough return pump flow you should be good. My modular marine overflow is similar but the teeth aren't cut as deep.

You can sort of see the tooth depth on the side of the box in this photo:

your teeth are more narrow...

You could raise the height with a piece of acrylic glued inside the box. Shouldn't effect the visual nature of it.

They looked very similar to me, but you may be right (I think mine is a much longer box as well).

I agree with the above poster though, just superglue in a piece of black acrylic at the bottom of the teeth in the back. I say superglue instead of weld-on so it's not permanent. Won't affect the look at all and will achieve the goal of raising the water level in the tank. I would strongly suggest running a water test on the tank first though, you may be surprised at how high the water raises up on that overflow with how "small" it is and how narrow the teeth are.

I agree you could raise the level with some acrylic inside the box, but you won't know for sure until you have it set up with your return pump going because the higher the flow the higher the level will be.

i also thought this and i do have some 1/4" black acrylic in stock at the house! guess ill hose test it with a 5 gallon bucket sump and the return pump tonight before i waste my time painting the back ect... might just upgrade to a deep blue 57 rimless :-O

HAHA

I WAS SO EXCITED FOR A RESPONSE AND I GOT THIS :( I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED THOUGH

ANYONE ????? :sad1::clown:
Well I installed mine. Didn't run water yet. But I see what you mean. Did you run water. I was going to put a ball valve on the one return line drain and run as herbi.

Use a gate valve instead of a ball valve for the Herbie. It's so hard to tune the full siphon side with even the highest quality ball valves.

I'm not gonna knock the gate valve but I took my ball valve apart and used silicone lubricant on the ball and it runs almost smooth enough to get fine tuning. Could also be I got lucky.

I have the Eshopps Eclipse in size medium on my 72 G. My tank is also bordered, and I placed the top of the internal weir snug against the plastic trim along the top of the tank, for the same concerns.

I'm running a 1" ID reinforced nylon hose with a Two Little Fishies ball valve to regulate flow on the primary overflow drain. The emergency drain is a the same type of hose, without a valve, just straight to the sump.

With a Jebao / Jecod DCS3000 return pump, the water level has not dropped below the plastic trim on the lowest power setting. At full power, it has not overflowed, or come close to overflowing. This product is fairly well thought out for us plastic trim tank owners.

I feel that overtime, a person will need to clean off some of the growth on the weir teeth. For me so far, it has not been an issue. If for some reason a person was not able to, the water would just flow over the top and into the overflow... There would never be a flood, because there is no lid... I'd suggest a strainer be placed on main drain 1" bulkhead to keep critters out. My Valentini did jump out of the tank and it was found immediately below the overflow box... There is nothing stopping these guys from jumping over the weir and into the overflow box. I'd rather hear the emergency drain slurping air than fishing out my hoses.

One more thought... The main drain will funnel like crazy. I have not yet tried this, but I came across a thread where a guy placed a 45" elbow in the 1.5" drilled bulkhead to divert flow towards the emergency pipe. This stopped the whirlpool effect for him, and he's not running a strainer.

Ok, just got my eshopps eclipse medium overflow for my 75g standard tank. Do you think I should mount the top of the weir flush underneath the top of plastic trim or just use the template height as is?

Not a bad idea. The strainer has been working well. Just cleaned out the overflow for the first time since starting the tank (~6 mo.).

My only complaint with this overflow is that it builds up a lot of salt on the siphon side, because of a loose fitting lid and large vent hole in the top. Another potential issue is that it'll grow algae like a greenhouse because of the transparent body. 5 minutes every 6 months with a toothbrush completely solves this for me though.

Good product. Weir has not plugged up in any way, ever. No leaks in the bulkheads yet. Would buy another.
