40 Gal. Breeder Anemone only tank?

Opinions wanted.

Would it be possible for me to run this tank with a protein skimmer 3 times larger than needed as the only filtration in the system?

The skimmer is rated for a 125 gal. tank and it will be on a 40 gal. tank running with powerheads as well.

Do you mean without a fuge?

I used to run a 33 cube with live rock, in the tank, and a skimmer in a 10 gallon sump. Worked great.

Yes......nothing but the skimmer live rock and powerheads. No fuge no sump.

Thanks for the reply Todd.

Think that the sump/fuge would make things a bit easier, but if that isn't an option, I don't see any major issues.

Anything is an option for me but I don't see how things could be easier than just a good power skimmer and powerheads. Didn't mean that in a smart way.

Explain your thoughs on how the sump/fuge would make things easier because I don't want to over look anything in this set-up.

Thanks again.

With a "small" tank, any extra volume of water is helpful. (( my 40 breeder has a 20 long sump )).

Things might have changed over the last couple of years, but IME, hang on the back skimmers are nearly as good as in sump one.

Think that fuges are a great place for macro algae, which is great filtration, in addition to live rock.

A sump allows one to hide heaters, reactors, etc.

Anemones put out a surprisingly large amount of waste, and can be sensitive to that waste, so a fuge/sump will benefit them -- and you.

Sure, it can be done without a sump/fuge/in sump skimmer, but, IMO, it makes things easier to have them.

Very good points and I have a sump that I can put on if need be.

Now, the skimmer is already on the tank and up and running. Things have change in the HOB skimmer for sure. This is what I bought.

I cannot belive this thing and how much it skims and the pump is outside the tank on the skimmer. I was shocked at how great it works, to the point I'm buying one for my 90 gal. DT. I have a Remora Pro mag 3 on it right now.

Hmm Sounds like you have everything. Just make sure your not mixing all different types of anemones. Add them slowly so your tank and the anemones can adjust. I do agree sumps help quite a bit. The amount of water alone made me throw a sump on my system. Good luck.

I have my tank established now and found some nice nems for it. I decided to go with a large HOB filter as well as a powerful skimmer. The anemones are very happy and love to eat but I only feed them about once a week.

My question is I don't want to over stock this 40 breeder. So what do you folks think about how many I can keep safely? I have chosen all RBTA.

It's all about the live rock. That's your biological filtration. If you have live rock in your main tank, and have great water movement (and high dissolved oxygen levels) with a good protein skimmer, you'll be fine.

The only thing I would add is watch your feeding. They're anemones not pythons :) Small food frequently is better than big chunks.

Hey Sport507, I have a question about your 40B, what lights do you use for your tank, and if you got them from a site could you post a link? The reason being, is I would like to start something like this aswell, I have started making a DIY 40b with a 20L sump. Thanks

For this tank I went t-5 lighting. Odyssea is not know for good quality but this fixture seem pretty good. I changed all the bulb first thing.

I use Aquatic Life fixture on my other tanks.

I think you should be fine. I agree a sump makes it more convinent though. My tank at home is now a 40 breeder with a 20 sump which I run with 2x175MH. I took my skimmer off years ago and use only cheato and live rock. Whatever you choose to do- the water parameters will tell you if your doing things right.

So you use the 3x39w Fixture? Will that be enough lighting for BTA's?

Mine are doing fine thus far but it they need more I will make a change. I think it's more about quality of the light spectrum (par) than just brightness and power.

There are other here that have much more exprience than I. Maybe they will comment.

Also the 40B is only 16" tall if it were 24 tall then I would add much more light.
