40 Gal Breeder Stock List - Recommendations

I'm not sure if you should add the mandarin dragonet.

Maybe give it a try, might work out.I would add LOADS of extra pods and give them time to set up a good population and add to the population every month or so.

So if I were to replace a 6-line with a fairy or flasher then I should be ok to add a Mandarin. correct?

IME, lined and leopard wrasses are more predatorial than fairy and flashers. However, do expect competition for pods from a flasher or fairy too. You can try. It might work.

Fairy and flasher wrasses have a significantly more difficult time picking pods than other wrasses. They are much more adept at feeding from.the water column. I would not consider either fairy or flasher to be any real competition for pods. That being said a mandarin may be able to deplete the pods produced by a 40 on its own.

Not sure which ones you are referring to specifically but my supermale Lineatus and female flame wrasse were quite into pods.

Fairy and flasherwrasse behavior of any species has them more interested in being in the water column to look for food and to look for mates and rivals than to explore the rockwork mostly hunting for pods, and the physical design of their jaw and teeth make them comparably inefficient than Halichoeres or Macropharyngodon wrasses. Any planktivorous fish will be interested in pods, but being efficient enough to deplete a pod population is something completely different.

With limited supply in a smaller system it's different though. I always saw dead pods swimming my tank with a fairy wrasse in. Wouldn't be my choice to put a mandarin with a wrasse in a system that size but OP thinks he/she can grow enough for both. If that's the case it may work.
