40 Gallon Custom, looking for feedback...

Thanks everyone!

BruiseAndy- Yes I'm sure it's not cavitation I only added the rack after testing it and I've got valves on both ends of the pump. I've tried everything possible to quiet it further. It's not too bad now, certainly louder than it should, but still within reason. :) For now I'm just going to hold on to it. I don't feel like taking my CL out of commission waiting for a replacement pump.

Russ- Consider it done, I'll PM you when they come in. :) Does anyone else need any snails, I should have about 30+ left...

Okay Eric, you asked me about where you might be able to put a T and a ball valve... I've found it. Basically, if you want to do a 5-gallon water change, you need to remove 2" from the top of the tank (24"x24"x2"/230=5 Gallons). I think you can do this by adding a T and a ball valve to any of the 4 outlets from your OM closed loop. I'm pretty sure that if you were to add a T and ball valve here, you would be able to "suck" out 5 gallons. Dump 5 gallons into the sump, reduce the return line with a ball valve and you're all set. The only thing you'll need to pay attention to is that you need to have ALL of your loc-line returns at least 2" below the surface... shouldn't be a problem.

What do you think?

Only problem is that it would only pump out water little at a time because of the Squirt... It would only be draining for about 15 seconds and then I'd have to wait until it cycled around again... Plus if I'm going in above the tank, I can just as easily do a syphon and remove the water the old fashion way... Hmmm what to do, what to do... Maybe I just have to keep doing what I've been doing, if it's not broke don't fix it right?

Yea, I thought of that after I finished typing... I had typed enough to make it so that I didn't want to cancel the post.

I agree... if you're going to just syphon out water from the display tank, you may as well just use some 1" tubing.

Eric, if you're looking for an easier way to do a water change, what about putting a "Y" off your return with a ball/gate valve? Pump the 5 gal out of the sump using the return pump and use a separate pump to pump it back into the sump from your bucket of new SW.

I already have one that feeds the chiller, Not sure if I have the room for another one, I still need to install the check valve. I might be able to replace the T with a X and have two valves off it... Maybe it would be easier and just take the 10G sump out every time, clean it and then set it back up... :)

Then again that would be most effective for removing detrius from the sump... Hmmm the crazy stuff that goes through my head.

Update time again...

Here's some firefish I couldn't pass up, especially the purple. I've never seen one with a yellow body. Obviously, I couldn't just leave it. ;)

I was just talking about the possibility of getting some firefish for my setup. I love that purple one. The only thing is, it looks like he is REALLY mad. :)

I have one of the same purple-firefish. It was the showpiece of the tank until I bought the first Tang. Once I put the tang in, I almost never saw the firefish, or pair of high-fin Gobies.

I was bummed, the tang never bothered the firefish or gobies, but they are seldom seen anymore. I guess it's hard to overcome the instinctive flight response.

The firefish was inadvertently used as my new tank guinea-pig. When I moved the first few pieces of LR into the new 125, he managed to hitch-hike along and become the first fish in the tank ( which hadnt totally finished cycling ). He's still perfectly happy after 1 year old.

Well my tanks too small for tangs and I'm hoping what ever wrasse I add will be fine... Anyone have a favorite wrasse I should consider? One that's not too pricey though, I'm wating to focus my $ on the corals instead... :)

Hey Eric, wanna give us a few more full-tank shots to relieve the "I need pictures" inside all of us?

I NEED PICTURES!!! :)

I stopped by a fish store today looking for a few more fish to please my wife... found one blue/green chromis, but she needs two or three. I think they will finish off the 29 as far as fish are concerned.

Hey Scott, sorry bro just been really busy with work and that's when I normally spend most of my time here. :) (don't tell anyone...) Anyway still nothing new, my peppermint shrimp spawned a bunch of fry the other day which quickly became food for my firefish. It happened too fast for me to get pics :(. I'm hopeing to have my new gobies this weekend and will post more pics then, in the mean time, I'm trying to plan my next project... :D

I was browsing through the large tank threads where people seem to have an infinite supply of funds for their tanks and I was like "hmm that'd be cool to have on a small tank. Oooo that's nice... wouldnt that be sweet." and I was building the ultimate mini reef in my head then I was like "damnit! Eric already has that!"

This tank is sweet!

For those who might not have seen this yet, here's the first coral to test things out... So far so good!

I wish I could get the color in the pic just right, but they just don't come close to how bright it really is...

Very nice tank! My cube is shaping up to be much like yours on a slightly smaller scale...thanks for giving me such a good target to shoot for!

can you post a pic of your electrical setup? how is everything wired into the american dj unit?

also, does the kent float valve simply pinch the hose coming from the kalk reactor, and open it when the water level gets low (using a gravity feed)?

Thanks Esper, I can't really get a pic of the electrics but it's very very simple, the back of the DJ unit is just 3 prong plugs and everything is just plugged in... The Kent float valve actually has it's own channel for the water to flow through and when the water level goes up it puts pressure on a valve closing the hole which the water comes out. It doesn't pinch the hose in any way the hose just feeds to float valve. Hope this answers your questions, if not feel free to PM me directly. :)

ahhhhh, so that's why they call it a float valve instead of a float switch. i get it now! lol...

thanks for the help...and i forgot to say before, i like the tank's inhabitants as much as the equipment! its coming along nicely!
