40 Gallon Custom, looking for feedback...

Hey Eric, I forget to mention that I love the picture of your little dude in the tank.

As for the Phoenix 14K's, I do like the color, but I don't love it. I must say, however, I'm not using a true HQI ballast, but rather an IceCap 250W E-ballast. For this reason, the bulb is a little bit more blue than I would like. My understanding is that a true HQI ballast will overdrive the bulb (I don't know by how much, but that's what I've been told) so the bulb runs a little more white when using the true HQI.

Either way, I am happy with the bulb compared to the Ushio 10,000K that I had before. If you have an actual HQI ballast (which I believe you do), then you'll love it.

I'm following this thread more and more closely now that I realize how similar my new tank is to yours. Mine is actually used, but it is using a lot of the same equipment. I have the SLS ROIII+, the Phoenix 14K 250W DE, EuroReef ES5-2, Mag 7 return, Iwaki MD40 on a closed-loop, and I will get the OM SuperSquirt shortly. Can't wait to see how your tank turns out.

Thanks Scott! It was pretty funny watching my son learn what acrylic is... He could see out but he couldn't get out... LOL!!! Glad to know others are using the same equipment, we'll either all succeed together or fail together. :P Besure to let me know when you have a thread for your setup.

can you snap a pic from a few feet back? I think its lookin awesome with the water and rock! how is the pluming and flow workin out for you?

Will do. I'll try to get it posted tonight for ya. :) The plumbing and flow is good so far, but the Q1 pump is still clicking so I'm sending it back for a new one. Should be a couple weeks till I have the new one. :(

This one makes the walls look green (they are not) so just focus on the tank. :)

And not too much light spill at all. Good job!

I have an idea for a little side tank once I get my big tank squared away. I'm planning on doing as much of the work as possible. I hope I can ask you some questions if I run into trouble...?

Thanks!

BTW, I'd go with a fuge as well.

Andy

man Im jealous of how awesome that has turned out! I think the aquascaping is cool and you could actually have two completely different looking setups from one viewing panel to the next! Like I could see one side being ricordia and lps and softies and the other being sps and monti caps and clams!!! lots of options!!!

Thanks for the comments Andy, I'm looking into a refugium as I type. Feel free to PM me if you need any help or suggestions if you run into trouble. :)

Excellent Eric, maybe I missed it in the last few pages but how do you like the flow so far? In and out of the display.

Thanks Brandon, I think the flow is perfect... The Q1 3000 is enough to handle the sump return flow and run flow through the chiller. For the CL, the Q1 5000 other than being loud (getting a replacement) works great too!

I like the rock formation! I know its gonna be an sps tank but what fishes do you plan on having?

Thanks Russ!

I'm really wanting a Bellus or Watanabei Angel, but I can't find any max size numbers... Other than that, a couple gobies and blennies and some inverts.

What types of Blennies were you thinking of? I love my yellow tail black sailfin blenny. He just watches me when I watch the tank. Great Personality.

Eric, they max out at about 6". Might be a little to large.

Tank looks great. How is the temp been since you moved the chiller out?

Haven't decided just yet, I was thinking something that's a sand sifter to keep the sand turned up... I'm certainly open for options as long as it's completely reef safe. :)

Thanks for the info Joe! Yeah that sounds a little too large, but I'm sure I wouldn't having trouble finding it a new home if there wasn't a price attached... Though that wouldn't be too responsible, huh? Have to think on that one. Dwarf angels are out and full size angels are certainly out, what does that leave for a show fish? :(

As for the temp, as you can see in the picures the tank hits 81.6 and then the chiller kicks on and knocks it back down to 79.5, I'll have to see how low it goes tonight (since I'm working all night :( ) and see if I even need a heater... :)

If anyone has a show fish suggestion please speak now! :) And please don't say clown fish...
