40 Gallon Custom, looking for feedback...

you know what calvin, i obtained another piece of the same coral that i got from you, but it is ACTUALLY that color, same corallite structure and the piece i got from you is finally beginnning to encrust... no color though... so i will let you know if it does anything, post a picture of some of the frags i gave ya, i want to see where you placed them... also let me know if you wanna work out a trade for a frag of your superman maybe red pavona frag?

Eric, I took a closer look at my cerealis frag that I got from you and it looks like its starting to color up. Maybe Z is starting to kick in.

Mike, that's cool! Mine is also starting to encrust and grow but I'm not seeing much color change... Maybe I need to stop looking everyday. :) As for the superman, I'm not sure what I'll be looking for in trade, but I'll let you know when I'm able to frag it.

Russ, it looks like it's coloring up to me! That's so cool! I'll have to get some more pics and look, sometimes it's hard to see until you have it blown up on your computer. :D

you should see how blue the tort i got from you has turned. its ridicoulous (sp?)... i picked up a new acro colony the other day which i BELIEVE is purple monster. its solomon cultured and I know they have been culturing it there, so we'll see how it does and if it colors up to be so, but i think that would be a more than suitable trade for a frag of your superman :)

this is what it should look like, its a little more pale right now... kinda like that cerealis...

i will try to post a picture to you to show you how blue your tort turned with my 20k

Very cool Mike! If it's a PM then that would be a great trade! Now I just need that superman to keep growing. :) If you compare the pics it's growing very well, but still not fragable... :(

Question about this tank

Question about this tank

Just curious..........

First let me say you'll have a great tank, but I'm curious if all the equipment you're planning on is really necessary? I have a 50 gallon reef tank and don't even have a sump.... I run 4 power heads and a hang on protein skimmer. I have VHO and MH lights without a chiller or ozone machine...

It seems to me that less might be better in small tanks.

Just my 2 cents.

There is more than 1 way to skin a cat... :) Sure I could probably do the same, but I didn't want anything hang on which is why I'm running a sump for my skimmer. I didn't want to see powerheads and cords in my tank which is why I did a closed loop with a squirt for wave making. Those parts are purely preference. I have a chiller because the tank is on the 2nd floor in my house and in the summer time it get's quite warm up there even with the AC running. Sure I don't need a chiller right now, but it's winter. If the tank was in my basement, I wouldn't need one at all, but on the 2nd floor in the middle of summer it's needed. As for the ozone, it more of a precaution as it's currently not on. I like to be better safe then sorry and should my ORP start dropping or water start looking yellow it's an easy way to fix it.

You are absolutely right, I could get away with less, but I could ask you the same question about VHO's and MH, is it really necessary or just a preference? I only run 1 MH. :D

Thanks for the comments!

I like equipment too! :D Just look at my gallery. I need to update the pics as I have added several pieces of "equipment" recently.

Is it necessary? Absolutely not! It just makes my life easier. Most pieces of equipment, filters, etc, just seem to cut down on overall maintenance and the amount of time you have to spend manually adjusting parameters.

But again, you will find this true all over this forum, you can do it however you like, you just have to keep certain things in check.
