400-500$ camera?

I was wondering what type of camera/brand I should be looking into for a digital camera if my budget is around 400$, perhaps a bit more. I'm looking for the best quality pics I can get, that won't have problems with reflections and blurriness. Is this a reasonable budget? Or should I have to spend even more for a camera? I'm looking for detailed photos of my tank, not really much else, with good color and a nice zoom feature. My problem with my current camera is that it blurs alot when I zoom in, and reflections on the glass are noticeable.

Nikon D50's are nice, but require a separate lens attachment, you can get a D50 with 18-55mm lens for around $440. The Fuji Finepix S9000 is nice 9MP with lens for around $470... I recently picked up a Canon S5IS for $350, its an 8MP that macro focuses up to 0 inches, so you can get right on the subject and it also does video..here is a shot with that camera

I take all my pics with the Canon S3IS, not expensive at all. Many of my pics are in the SPS forum.

you should be able to find aused D70(nikon) or a 10D(canon) for around that price. Your getting relections from the light around you. try shutting off the lights in the room so that the only light on is the tank. If your using flash turn it off! pump up your ISO and take it with the existing light in the tank.

It gets blurry because your too close to what ever your trying to photograph, try taking a step or two back and zooming in.

Thansk for the advice guys. After some more research I've decided to go with the Canon S5IS, sure it's not the bvery best out there, but it's far more than I need and at a reasonable price.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of a site that sells these cameras internationally? Or, more specifically, from the US to Canada. Most canadian sites haven't adjusted their prices since the dollar rose so high, so I can only find them for about 430$. Amazon apperently won't ship to Canada, and their listed price is 100$ less.

Thanks,
Cheebs.

The S5 is a fairly decent camera. It takes great macro pictures also. I have it and I'm practicing on it. I'm coming from a Canon SD800 IS. One thing I've been practicing on is taking shots of my TV on Manual. I'm sure that the light is different, but it's a start. I've been taking macro shots also but I'm shopping around for a Macro lens.

It's not the camera but the skills and determination of the person. I've seen very good macro shots from small Point and Shoot cameras around here that make you wonder what if that person had a better camera.

Practice is the name of the game. The S5 will not disappoint. I do hope you get it and get it at a good price. Good luck.

:D

We have the S5iS as well and really enjoy it. I'm no expert but it's been a good camera to learn on and I'm very glad we bought it. Easy to use like a point and shoot, but enough features that you can play around with to change things up.

I bought it last year around this time (xmas present for the g/f) from Merkle. It's a small store but the guy I dealt with, Patrick, is very knowledgable. My g/f's Dad has bought camera's (Nikon's) for over 15 years from him. I'll be going back to him for my next camera, also hopefully a Nikon ;).

Hope that helps,
Matt

I'm seriously considering the Canon S5 IS. The macro setting sounds really good, and it just seems like a good camera, especially for the price. My question for those who own is this; how well does it take landscape pictures? I'm hopefully moving to the mountains soon, and landscape photography will be mainly what I use it for. How about action shots (as in wildlife etc)?

Thanks for the help.

(sorry if this is a somewhat hijack Cheebs)

Hehe don't worry about hijacking, the christmas list is already out, S5 it is ;) If you are willing so wait I can always tell you how it is after I get it, if i do get it.

Sorry, haven't taken any landscape shots with it really. I do have these from a few months back that I took at the Toronto Zoo. It's wildlife, but hardly "action" shots.
