Here is the reply I got from John who works for the Manufacturer of this system....
>You are correct, this aquarium is in a home in Charleston, WV. It is our
fifth aquarium for this client.
The aquarium was designed to house reef sharks. The aquarium is
constructed of Reynolds' custom cast 2.5" 180" X 60" acrylic sheets. The
aquarium is 240" long and we did not want the mid panel seam dead center,
so this seemed the best way to go.
We tried to get the client to go with FRP end and back panels, but he
would not go with that.
The aquarium was craned in place and we had to wait almost nine months for
the house to be built around it.
The shark safe artificial reef insert was made of food grade plastic by an
artist in Nevada and installed on site.
Lighting is pretty basic as sharks and rays are not fond of really bright
lighting. Five 400 watt 12,000K MH and two incandescent "moon lights" all
run by independent digital timers.
Now we get to the neat part; LSS. Our bio-system can handle 15# of waste
per day and is is injected with huge amounts of air to make the media self
cleaning, this system is run in a loop through the sump. The skimmer is
also run in a loop through the sump. It is a large RK-2 skimmer with an
RK-2 ozone generator. Return water goes through two 50 microm filter
"socks" filled with carbon.
The aquarium pumps each drive half the system; a single pump failure is
not an emergency. One pump drives 220 GPM through a carbon filter containg
240# carbon then through a 5HP heat pump and to the aquarium. The other
pump drives 220 GPM through another carbon filter containing 240# carbon
then through a six bulb UV sterilizer (65 watts each bulb) and then to the
aquarium. By-passes are plumbed into every component so we can adjust the
flow or remove the component if necessary. All the water going into the
sump has to go through 50 micron filters before entering the sump.
The system uses an Aquadyne 3000 controller and Neptune Systems modules so
I can handle alarm situations from my computer.
The system has been running for over a year and the aquarium has never had
to be cleaned!
