400w Halides over an Acrylic tank

I have a 300 gallon acrylic (1/2" thick) tank that is 30" deep. I'm looking at putting 2 X 400w in the middle and 2 X 250w on the sides. Should I be worried about structural issues in the acrylic due to the heat? How many fans should I run?

Thanks in advanced.

I'm not sure about how many fans, but I do remember reading one guy's website (in Minnesota, I think) where the MHs melted the top half of his tank while he was away at work. Great damage to home and loss of tank inhabitants ensued.

He went all-glass next time. Some might think that an overreaction ...

I would guess that height of the fixtures above the tank would also play a role.

you need a minimum of 12" between your lights and the top of the tank, If your using a canopy it should be open in the back , fans are also very helpful

I have 3 400's over my 300 and only 2 openings. I have them about 14-16" above the tank and they do fine. I have a fan blowing that kicks on with the lights. The center one shines through the approx. 16" acrylic section and although it is a little more shaded it does a good enough job for the sps under it. And my tank is a 1/2 thick tank.

Like everyone said. You should be fine as long as the MH are high enough.

Just wondering what are the dimension of your tank?

Do open top instead of a hood so the heat would not build up. If your center brace is narrow you can have halide on top of it.
