40B mantis reef

my mantis seems pretty calm, the damsel seems to mind his own business and stay away from the mantis. what kind of coral did you have in your tank with the mantis? i like zoas and euphyllias (torches, frogspawn, hammers) but am worried about car for the euphyllias. i would like some info on difficulty and personal experience. thanks

You may have to ask about coral care in a different forum. It's not that people can't help you here but there are a lot of people who are more knowledgeable about coral specifically in different forums. I'd try the softie or LPS forum for a question about the coral.

But in general, mantis shrimp and coral aren't really a problem together. My Peacock will move things around if it's not secured properly, but I don't mind. She never strikes the coral and I haven't heard of too many issues with mantis shrimp striking soft or hard corals of any type. The only mantis I can think of that might deliberately attack coral is the G. Ternatensis because they often make their burrow in the heads of live branching corals.

Alright thanks, I'll try the LPS subforum. Do you have any experience with dwarf angels with your mantis?

I don't have any experience with fish at all, haha. I've read a lot about it, but have never introduced any fish to my mantis shrimp tanks. Mostly because I don't want to have to worry about buying fish food. I always tell people that the more fish you have, the more risk you run in general, and not just that the mantis will kill them. I've read that sometimes mantis shrimp are spooked by lots of fish, especially if those fish aren't just small damsels or something. You can certainly give it a try though.

So my damsel has ich, just setup a qt and will be doing hypo salinity, so I'll probably have another mantis in a couple of months

So.. After reading this thread I don't understand why you probably will have another mantis in a couple of months?

The ten that I moved the damsel to for hypo may become another rescue mantis tank or may just become a sump for the 40. The damsel died last night and whatever it had wasn't ich. It lost all its scales and was bleeding from the gills

I think the mantis is molting, he has one entrance to it's den completely blocked and the other entrance partially blocked. How long does it normally take for a 3 inch mantis to molt?

There's a good stickie on this forum describing in great detail how the molt process works/how long it takes. My Peacock just molted too, took her about a week to regain her ability to strike. Now she's hitting everything...rocks, snails, PVC burrow, the glass (rarely, but yikes!)....

Just got back from the lfs with a toadstool leather coral and an emerald crab to deal with the bubble algae

as for the care with the LPS (large polyp stonies such as frogspawn and etc) you need to test for alk, cal, mg in addition to your regular tests.

if you need any assistance reading it I will be more than happy to help if you post the results and what you need to do to raise or lower accordingly.

I have alk and cal tests but not mg. I'm using aquaforest reef salt so the numbers are good as long as I don't have high demand for them. I ended up going with an acan lord( Micromussa lordhowensis) as I didn't want to spend $60-100 on my first lps coral. I also have a Duncan coral. My mantis has become much shyer after the molt, he only comes out for food. Is this personality swing common with molts?

Yeah. Until his shelling become perfectly hard again after the molt and his smashers are good, he will be a little like that. Defense mechanism.
