Hey guys, Im in the process of setting up a 40Breeder SPS dominant reef and want 5-7 small reef fish in this tank.

Here are my current thoughts:

Forktail Fang Blenny:

I like the fairy wrasses, but something else to consider is that it will be an open top aquarium, no netting.

Not a fan of the clowns, or hogfish.

I have a 40 breeder as well and my stock list consists of 2 ocellaris clowns, 1 lubbocks fairy wrasse, 1 carpenters flasher wrasse, and 1 Bangaii Cardinal. Our tanks are way too small for any tang, the smallest you could get away with would be a 75 gallon 4 foot tank and that would be for a Kole or other small bristletooth tang variety not a Yellow which would require an even bigger tank. You can still get a ton of awesome swimming and movement out of small fairy and flasher wrasses that are almost always more colorful than tangs anyway.

Just re-read the post and saw you won't be adding any netting or a top which might take wrasses off the table. I see my Lubbock's and Carpenters each bounce off my screen top at least once a week. If they were near the tanks edge when they did that, they would be on the carpet for sure.

Something else to note, prior to adding my screen top, I had a glass lid on that left only a .5" gap that a red firefish I had jumped out of.

No yellow tang, i hate to be the person that has to say this but 40b 3 feet 125(recommended tank size) 6 feet. Also you plan to keep 7 fish one of which is not suitible for your tank( yellow tang) but this tank will be SPS if im right SPS dont do well with a crowded tank

Also, firefish have a tendancy to jump so an open top is not the best for them.

Ventralis anthias do better in temps a little lower than most keep their reefs, low/mid 70's.

Recommendations would include a liopropoma basslet or Gramma, Pink streak wrasse, Barnacle blennies, stigmatura blenny, A pr of clowns, I prefer sandacinos, or perhaps clown gobies.

there is no "plan" these are suggestions...

Thank you to everyone else who made a positive contribution, I agree the yellow tang is out, as well as fairy wrasses.. unfortunately.

I do love the ventralis anthias though!

Neon gobies?

Neon gobies would be fine. You can get bonded pairs on saltwater fish Com pretty reasonably. Not a very long lived fish though I don't think.

What about a Midas Blenny? They have a nice yellow color, have a cool swimming motion, and generally swim in the open.

There are so many choices of gobies and blennies that will stock well in a 40 breeder. Also have several options in the basslet/gramma family. A pistol/goby pair would be good in that size tank (assuming your not going bare bottom) You also can look into a flameback pygmy angel if ya wanted, pretty well behaved and stays small, also look at blue reef chromis for some color/movement you normally get out of the tangs and schooling anthias you couldn't add. Another good option is a longnose hawkfish, geometric Pygmy hawkfish, or possibly a flame hawkfish. There's lots of cardinal fish out there... Bangaiis and PJs are common, and the Orbic, Blue-eyed, or ORA black cardinals are great too. And if your not against it, you can try a dottyback. Great colors, just have been known to be aggressive, so add him last, and a little jumpy but not more than a firefish goby.

I've got a clown, a yellow candy hogfish and a scooter blenny in my 30breeder. I've added 4 different wrasses and the hogfish has not welcomed any to the tank, just nips them constantly when they are out. 2 have been returned to the store, the other 2 never made it (poor possum wrasse) I absolutely love my hogfish, but add him last and with caution if you change your mind on it lol.

Do not do a pair of any firefish unless you have another tank or someone to take a fish when it doesn't work out.

They'll be ok for a few months & then all hell breaks loose, not a pretty sight.

Check out the leopard wrasse primer, in the sticky at the top of the forum page. They are pretty hard to keep from what I've read.
