40g breeder stock list

I'm in the planning stages of getting a 40g breeder (can't set up my 120g in current home, and can't wait 5-8 years to start a new tank)
Here are some of the ones I for sure want to get.
Blackcap basslet (I wish you could get other color basslets)
Lawnmower blenny

Hopefully but not sure if it would be ok size wise
Mckosker flasher wrasse
Bartlett anthias

I don't know if I like fire fish (any experiences)
I'm used to bigger tanks so it's hard picking out smaller fish.

The stripes are alternating orange and lavender, a little shy and alot less aggressive than the blackcap.

I had a hard time getting my nanos stocked too, I like the above basslet, it's also called a pacific candy basslet, my favorite was a pink streaked wrasse. I also liked my tanakas possum wrasse. Cherub pygmy angel was also pretty cool.

Can you put multiple of the smaller wrasses in a 40g breeder? It would be 3' long and many hiding spaces since doing mostly a sps tank

The pink streaked and the tanakas get along fine; just don't add anything like a 6 line, they are known to be nasty. Those 2 cruise and hang out in the rocks. I never liked the flasher wrasses, they do require more swimming space than many recommend, although a 40b would probably be fine. I also found the flasher wrasses aggressive toward the peaceful cryptic fish I prefer, I had a McCosker's that terrorized my tanaka, pink streaked, and pacific candy. I yanked him, If you want an open swimming flashing wrasse then that's one way to go.

Ok so a blackcap basket and a flasher might just fight in the tank since it is a little smaller

The blackcap will probably hold his own, if you were planning a blackcap and a flasher. The flasher never bothered my blue assessor, he wouldn't put up with it. If you plan on basing your stock around those two, I wouldn't advise any competing less aggressive shy fish in the bunch.

Ya I'm ok without the blackcap but just didn't want any wrasses I got to pick on them. I guess I'm being over cautious with the smaller tank

How does this list look? Yellow tang would be for a friend. I'm growing him out till he is a touch bigger in a few months. And what order would you put them in.

I would avoid the tang, whether it's for you or not. They get stressed out in smaller tanks and will get aggressive as a result. Yellow tangs aren't difficult to find anyways so there's no reason for you to be holding it for a friend.

Without the yellow tang, I'm counting 6 fish. That's a lot for a tank that size, especially with the number of wrasses you have. The hoeven's and fairy wrasses won't do well longterm in a tank that size.

I would cut that down to the two clowns, the mccosker's wrasse, and maybe the blackcap basslet if you're still interested in that. Just note that in my experience (and from what I've heard from others), black ocellaris clowns tend to be meaner than regular ocellaris clowns. I kept one in a 30 gallon and it would bite me whenever I put my hand in the tank. It did make me bleed at times too. It never bothered its tankmates, but just giving you a heads up.
