40G Breeders

Hi, just wonder with the new petco sale coming up, why does it seem that every breeding setup i see people are using 20H tanks. Why bother with 20H when you can get 40breeders for the growout. I know that the hatching would do better in a 10G or 20G (H/L), but i dont see many people using 40 breeders for growouts.

just wondering.

If space is an issue, and with a proper rearing set up a larger tank isn't needed, why use the bigger tank?

Don't look in my fish room then... :)

I have 40B tanks from fresh water angel breeding and growout and they work fine in salt. Just that 300-500 angels form a single clutch of eggs reaching 30 days was common where I'm at 10% (or less) of that for saltwater. I've seen literally thousands of clowns grown out in a 55 gallon, so the volume really isn't needed.

Personally, I think the 40B is the ideal tank size for breeding, as well as coral propagation. Maybe that's why I use 20L tanks for coral propagation. :hmm3:

40 breeders are great for a lot of things! Turtle tanks, frag tanks, fish breeding. I used it for a massive coral display and occasional fragging, but now I'm tearing down for a scorpionfish tank.

There is enough length and width to give the fish some swim and crawl space as well as height to reach the bottom to feed.

It is like a hybrid of tanks! Some of the larger tanks have the length but no width, 1 foot of width is a pretty tight turn for a tang don't you think?

went to the local petco and picked up 6 20Longs. the breeders were bigger than i expected, but will be going back for 6 more 20L and two 40 breeders for the sumps.

just wondering whether i should pick up 3 10G for the 3 pairs i have.
