450 Gallon Peninsula Display

Great thread and I really like the rock work and I see you added sand again. You still have your cross hatch trigger pair?

Thank you for the compliment.

Yes I added sand again. I like the look of sand but I need to figure out a way for it to stop blowing everywhere.

Unfortunately I lost both of my favorite fish. The female was the first to go and then 6 months later I lost the male. I am currently running with no fish until my rock gets some coralline algae.

Add some larger sized gravel over the top to hold the sand in place. Also, you can add a few small pieces of rock in strategic places to stop or reduce the amount of sand that gets blown about.

Thank you for your suggestion. I used sugar sized before and it was hell. This time I purchased Reef-Flakes and I was hoping that that larger grain size would be sufficient. I guess I will order a bag or two of Grand Select, when it is available.

I also think I want to siphon some sand out. I put a little more sand in than I wanted to have in my tank. I think it makes sense to remove some of the smaller grain sand before I add even more sand.

Here are some updated photos.

Looks great everything looks algae free and covered in purple coralline algae. Whats your secret on controlling algae are you running GFO? or anything pellets?

Thank you. I had a little bit of hair algae in the display but the refugium has done the trick. I gave up on GFO years ago and do not plan on using it anymore. GFO works well but it costs too much on a large system.

I have also been experimenting with Microbe-Lift Special Blend. So far I have been pleased with the results.

yea im going though the hair algae phase after 18 months i thought i was in the clear:sad2:. I have a similar tank peninsula style 270 and i am still running a closed loop and whoa is it expensive but its hard to get flow to the far end i have a rimless tank. What kind of stuff do you currently have in the refugium any pics?

I feel your pain. The hair algae was so bad in my main display that I started over and did an acid / bleach wash on all my live rock.

No pictures for the refugium, it's pretty basic and ugly. The main improvement I made was I purchased the Floralux light from HTG Supply. I read about it on D2MINI's thread and he really seemed to like it, thank you Dennis . I grow cheato and hair algae on the walls of the refugium. I initially kept the walls clear but the hair algae really gives the amphipods a good place to live.

Looks great! Got any special fish stocking plans this time around?

Thanks. I do not have any special plans, other than tangs. :)
