I used to have a 30 gallon tank with 20 gallon sump, but i had to shut it down before i went off to school. Now i am creating my own little tiny reef in a 5.5 gallon tank. I may have one goby, but my real goal here is to keep some corals and other funny little inverts. So far here is what i have going.

Basically, when you are looking at the tank, there is a overflow on the left. The water will flow over this onto some filter media represented by the white bio bag. I am working on a tray that will maybe slide into place behind the overflow so that i can slide in the filter media. The water will then pass through a slot into a refugium area. Here i will grow macroalgea over some mud substrate. I built a small slot to hold back substrate from the heater, which will sit where it was placed. The water will then flow over another piece of plexiglass into the final chamber. Here there is a minijet 404 which will pump water back to the two bulkheads passing through the black acrylic. There will be loc-line on both bulkheads. One will have a valve so i can regulate which line gets more flow. In the pump chamber is also a float switch so i can have a water top off system.

There are a few flaws i have noticed. Nothing is permanent yet, so if anyone has any suggestions, i will gladly accept them. I dont like how it is not very easy to remove the pump. I don't have the tubing in yet, but that will be nearly impossible to remove. The float switch will be hard to remove. These are all problems i need to address.

I want to run a jbj 70 watt lamp over the main tank. Is that too much? will i need a cooler? If i needed one, i could drill the back of the tank.

I need some small way to light the refugium too.

Cool setup, my first nano was a 5.5g. The 70w will be fine, I had 2 70W 14K w/ 32W of PC actinic on my 5.5 it was great. Just blow a fan on the light and you should be fine heat wise. You may want a back up switch for the auto top off, in case that one every malfunctions, it better than flooding your home. Looks good though.
