5.5g in the works

so i've been trying to set up my 25g cube for QUITE some time now. my wife and i are moving sometime in the next 4months so i don't want to set it up just to have to move it just after cycling. so in the mean time im going to quench my SW thirst by doing a 5.5g pico. i picked up about 50lbs of macro rock for my 25g so i will be using some of that for the 5.5g

equipment
5.5g (buying tomorrow)
AC70/fuge (have and will convert to fuge tomorrow)
50w heater (have)
par30/38 (purchasing this weekend)
light timer

fish
yasha goby

inverts
pistol shrimp
3 sexy shrimp
CUC

corals
zoa/polys
various LPS
a few SPS

after the tank gets started up I will probably add an ATO system since i am out of my office 1-2days every couple weeks. since it was friday and i was bored i did a layout i think i like. i think i will do it a peninsula with the HOB at one end and maybe a small powerhead eventually at the other.

the spray can represents the height of the tank, 10" exactly

let me know what you guys think and if i need anything or should change anything.

Thanks, I'm not much of a fan of BB tanks though. I picked up the tank and a thermometer on my way home from work today

getting a rapidled par38 from someone on nanoreef. the back of the tank is painted and im soaking my old equipment in water/vinegar mix. i'll be making my fuge tomorrow

I really like the rocks chosen, and setup. Looks very nice!

Now I'd be careful with a par38 on a 5.5g - that's quite a bit of light for such a small tank. I'd start the light quite a distance away, initially, then slowly adjust/acclimate the tank to the powerful LED bulb/fixture.

Regardless, keep us posted. :)

i've got everything in my office now. im still trying to find a bulb, i may just order today or tomorrow. the fixture is 14" about the tank now. going to epoxy the rock today on my lunch break

got a little bored yesterday and re did some rock. i liked the cup coral skeleton but i guess the epoxy i used was crappy and was pretty weak. i added a second island. i think the right side will be zoas and ricordia, and the left will have a few sps. i want that left top ledge to have a sweet encrusting monti on it. im going to makeor find a floating rock magnet for the top right under the filter.

just a little update, diatoms appeared last week and i began testing. monday i dropped in some chaeto. i received my JBJ ATO yesterday, just have to buy some air tubing. my salinity was low so i purchased some Red Sea Coral Pro and mixed some water to bring my sg up. tomorrow i will get a CUC for the tank. the same lfs has some digitata for $10 so i may grab a small frag to see how it likes my tank. im also contemplating using my MP10 on the tank. lastly, i decided the my sole fish in the tank will be a tail spot blenny :D

test results from today
sg - 1.024
temp - 79*
pH - 8.2
ammonia - 0
nitrite - 0.3ppm
nitrate - 0.2ppm
po4 - .02ppm
alk - 10.1dKH
Ca - 400ppm

looking nice. are you going to be adding anything other than corals?

how is the par38 LED light working for you?

i am planning on a porcelain crab and maybe (big maybe) a cleaner shrimp. i do want a tail spot blenny but i need to build a cover first to prevent any jumping.

i really like the par38 bulb and most importantly the corals seem to like it. i wish it were a bit more blue. my LPS look the best under it so far. the monti lost a bit of the green but the polyps are extending nicely on it. this is the Garf's first day under the light so i can't really tell how it will react. it has retained a good bit of its purple color and it seems like its trying/wanting to extend its polyps.

is the AC70 providing enough flow? did you turn it down abit or is it on full?

any idea what you are going to use for a cover? maybe a thin sheet of acrylic?

do you plan on lowering your light at all?

i have the filter turned all the way down. i think its providing decent flow, the hammer in the corner is moving a bit. i have thrown around the idea of a MP10, i have one laying around.

for the cover i have some clear netting from BRS so im going to make it out of a window screen frame.

i may lower the lights, we'll just have to see how the corals do. i may leave it at its current height until i get more corals then start lowering it. i dont want to bleach anything new coming into the tank

here's another pic of the acan expanding more throughout the day

i think i'm going to leave the digitata on that small rock and add some zoas on it. the garf i will mount higher. on the ledge on the top left of the rock is reserved for an encrusting monti.i will prolly leave the acan on the ground but move it from the side more towards the middle, then zoas mainly on the right.

so no algae issues yet... nice. do you have a link where you got your light from (the bulb) cant wait to see this tank as you keep adding more stuff
