5 gallon water from stores like home depot ok to use

IMO, I'd just go buy some distilled water from the store if you're in a pinch. It's about $.80 a gallon. (No need to add water conditioner either.)

I use the water machine at Walmart--LPS tank and things are fine. Been doing it for a couple years since my RO/DI unit acted up. I run a 40 gal setup so I don't need a lot.

I used to use straight RO water, but after checking it with a TDS meter, was still getting high readings. I would only go back to store water if I was in a jam. Wal-mart is probably your best bet!

Are the water jugs that you trade in to stores ok to use for a reef tank.

Yes but the small neck opening makes it hard to get your hands/rocks,etc... in there and the round sides distorts whatever you plan to keep inside the jug.. I'd use an aquarium instead.. Water jugs make crappy reef tanks.. :frog:

:lmao:

Use a TDS meter to be sure the store is changing its filters, and I would use one at the cash register and immediately 'return' any bottle that fails the TDS. If their filter is shot, they should be told. And they should refund.

Yep.
A local water place was just called out by the local reef club with high TDS in their water. Club member went in with a meter.
