50 ft. zoas

how do you get zoos without taking the rocks? i just cant imagine you fragging them at 50 ft...

(maybe you dont want to answer that question...)

lol

You just have to find the right piece, a lot of "reef structure" is not a hunk of live rock. It is hard algae and rubble, calcareous debris.... since they will grow anywhere you can find a easy spot to take a few polyps off with out going the chisel route.

lol,

tried superglue gel at 50', glued the regulator to my lip.

I have not found thousands of zoanthids, yet. biggest colony I have seen so far has been say 3'X3' and they have been very scattered. I am still new to diving, so my experience is limited. I have dove a few times and not seen a single polyp.
I used an old screwdriver to get under the zoas and peel some of them off the rock. Just take a small frag and make sure to leave some to grow back.
There's laws and bag limits on what you are allowed to collect, zoanthids luckily being one of the cans. Many of the items you see for sale from the caribbean can be collected right here in the big pond.

Do you have to have a salt water fishing license for collection? Where are decent places to dive (Keys?, Atlantic side?)? I've seen tons of Palythoa sp. in the Caribbean, but only a few small colonies of Zoanthus sp. (never dove Fl, though).

I dove out of Jupiter, FL a few weeks back, and I saw hundreds of colonies throughout the four dives we did with Jupiter Dive Center.

Many different colors varieties as well.

These were all in the 70-90 feet range, and mostly up on the top side of the ledges they have there.
