50 gallon cube and sump set up

Hi,

I am looking at either the 9006 or the 9011 skimmer for my new set up. Live rock, coral, and fish. The calculator on the tunze website recommends the 9006, but the small size of the cup concerns me. Would the 9011 be just to big?

If you will have a sump, the 9011 is generally the way to go as it includes the sump kit. The 9006 is best suited for in tank use, the cup is short to fit under a canopy and the sump kit is optional, by the time you buy the sump kit it is nearly the price of a 9011.

One last question, I didn't think of until now, what are the dimensions of the 9011 set up for use in the sump?

I have the 9011 in hand. I unboxed it, added the overflow pipe for use in my sump and plugged it in.

There is no overflow coming out of the pipe. Looking at how the pipe hooks up I dont see how there can be, it plugs into the hole that is part of the cover containing the screen for water inlet. Am I missing something?

Did you add the coupler and solid bottom plate? These are both needed to force water through and out the pipe, parts 9010.400 and 9010.200.

I added the bottom plate that uses the rubber suctions cups. The bottom plate doesn't seal well as the pump keeps it from doing that. Page 65 of the instruction manual does not list a coupler, is there another name for it?

I used parts number 12,13,8,11 and 15, to set it up for use in the sump. 24 hours later and there is still nothing coming out the overflow pipe of the skimmer.

The manual refers to it as sleeve below cover, part 10 (9010.400). This has to be installed between the pump and the intake grate on the front. Pages 44-49 explain assembly for sump use. Water will come out of the pipe within seconds if it is assembled correctly, the bottom tray will not seal completely but the pump should not interfere if it is installed correctly, though the wight may bow the lid slightly, that won't happen when it is resting on it.

Ok part number 10 can not be installed because the pump does not fit far enough into the skimmer body so that part 10 will light up with the cover. The wall inside the skimmer body is only attached on one side. It appears that it was at one attached on either side but it isn't now.

My guess is the pump isnt sliding into that pipe far enough causing these problems.

I really don't want to start trimming and cutting and gluing on a new skimmer, any suggestions?

The nozzle of the pump inserts into a pipe inside, you may have to wiggle the pump or turn it to get it to line up and go into that pipe.

Yes, it is fairly common for the glue joint on one side to break on that plate but it is not a very consequential thing, it will still work as long as that plate is their, you should not have to cut anything, I think it is just a matter of lining up the skimmer nozzle with the clear pipe so it inserts into it.

The pump was not seated properly, it must have come loose in transport. The bottom now seals properly and I have flow on the output side of the pipe.

I see that the skimmer body above my water line has a leak, looks like out of a corner. As long as the water flows out of the overflow pipe, will this be an issue? Is this normal? or should I return it for replacement?

Alan

That leak is normal, the top can be pulled off for doing repairs inside but I don't recommend it, the clip system is fairly complicated, but sometimes down the road it is easier to replace a silencer for example with that part removed.
