500 Gallon Build

hi fox valley - have followed along since the start - aweseome stuff.

am nearing my filling date of my own build, and am really trying to avoid live rock...

i know you got dry rock.... did you have to cure it? were you bothered about not having live rock?

i'm asking for some convincing here! i will have a sump, bio pellets in a reactor etc, so i dont envisage a massive issue with nitrates & phosphates if i didnt go the live rock route.... it's just i dont want to have a waste 2 weeks curing rock to avoid phosphates etc....

what you reckon?

Depends on where the dry rock is coming from. This is old fossilized rock where there is nothing to die off. No need to cure it. Just rinse it a bit before putting in. Put in a few pieces of live rock and it will spread throughout and you wouldn't know the difference after a while.

He is getting excited with only 10 more days to go...

He's looking great :)

What's the biggest fish you have right now?

Ours is probably our 5-6" Black Tang. Our 4" Crosshatches look tiny when they swim the length of the tank. They're really the only fish you get that sort of perspective with.

They swim near the front glass and swim pretty much in straight lines. The tangs all swim in different patterns in and out of the rocks. So it's hard to just see them swimming "laps".

The rabbit fish would be the biggest. Then its all pretty close between marine beta unicorn and purple. I guess the beta is only that big when he fans out his fins.

Yeah it's funny how small our super male Flame Wrasse looks until he gets a bit annoyed and "spreads" out. haha

The purple may be close to the rabbit. Hard to tell until he's in there with the rest. Then there's little Fowleri to go in at the same time lol.

Thanks my favorites are probobly the rock pics lol. Neat to see the coraline growth on them up close.

Put Fowleri Tang in last night and to my surprise the yellow eye kole tang was the first to harrass him. After he let off powder blue took over and still was this morning when I left. I could see some fin damage. I sure hope the damn powder blue stops!

The fish seem to know who is the most prize piece and most expensive in the tank and want to attack them. Same **** with my male watanabei and that angel.

Powder blue was even harrassing the purple tang even though hes 3 times bigger lol. Doing super fast circles around him.

Hopefully they figure it out!

The first fish we put in our tank was a Tomini Tang and 3 Cardinals.

The Tomini would bother every tang that came in after.

He became a loner and kept to his side.

The Yellow, Purple, Black, YB Blue and Chevron hung out together.

Found the Purple dead one day, then the next the YB Blue and Yellow scared the Tomini into killing itself on the glass. I felt they also killed the Purple, but not I feel maybe the Purple and the Tomini might have gone at it...

Worried about adding 3-4 tangs down the road (2 of them much more $$$ than the others), but hoping having a high fish population will reduce the tang on tang violence. When all this happened months ago, was really only the Tangs in the tank.

I will have a pretty high fish population, but 90% of the fish I like are all tangs lol. And angels I can not have.

Yeah I'm really back and forth on angels...

Hopefully if I keep them fed they'll just munch on a Zoa here and there... I mean they must be guardian angels eating those toxic Zoas ;)

I have some nice LPS, so I'd be really worried about that.

Really back and forth... need to make a decision soon and go that way with $$$ corals for the frag tank. If I'm set on Angels I'll focus on SPS. Otherwise I'll do LPS.

Heard lots of people with Clarions and Bandits say they've either not bothered coral, or just taken out a section but not the whole colony...
